UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships and Scholarships’ Programme: 2010 Cycle – With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in “people building the next era”, 20 fellowships and scholarships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research based on scholarships’ aid on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships and scholarships’ aid is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

INTRODUCTION Mr Keizo Obuchi, former Prime Minister of Japan, passed away on 14 May 2000 at the age of 62. Soft-spoken and charismatic, he was known as a man of integrity, honesty and modesty. He built a reputation as an exemplary official and was a particularly adept negotiator. A member of Japan’s Diet (Parliament) for over thirty years, he served as Japan’s Foreign Minister in 1997 until he was elected Prime Minister in July 1998. Mr Obuchi was known in the international arena for his commitment to development issues and his resolve to put Japan at the forefront of countries involved in consolidating the efforts of the international community to further progress in the social and economic development of humankind. B. OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS’ PROGRAMME The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships and scholarships’ Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi: 1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); 2. Intercultural Dialogue; 3. Information and Communication Technologies; and 4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered. C. SCHOLARSHIPS’ ELIGIBILITY 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” for undergraduate English course students
The University of Tsukuba invites applications from international students for the 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” as per the guidelines outlined below. The University of Tsukuba’s “English Course Program”, which will commence in the 2010 academic year, is newly established program through which international students studying at the University of Tsukuba at the undergraduate level can earn their academic degrees by taking classes only in English. 1. Purpose The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for exceptional international students who are applying to enter the University of Tsukuba’s English Course Program at the undergraduate level, thereby contributing to the cultivation of people who can make future contributions to international society. 2. Application Qualifications and Conditions Applicants for this scholarship must fulfill the following conditions: Nationality: Applicants whose nationality is of a country other than Japan (limited to those countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations). Applicants who fulfill the qualifications for entering the English Course Program in any of the following undergraduate schools: (reference) Courses to be established in 2010 Undergraduate Program of International Social Studies, School of Social and International Studies Interdisciplinary Course of Life and Environmental Sciences, School of Life and Environmental Sciences Applicants who, upon entering the University of Tsukuba, do not receive nor expect to receive a scholarship or scholarships from any other scholarship-granting organizations or bodies for the purpose of studying abroad. 3. Duration of Scholarship The duration of the scholarship will be from the first month of entering the university until the end of the applicable academic year (August 2010 to March 2011). From April 2011, students may apply for other scholarships from the University of Tsukuba or from other scholarship-granting organizations or bodies. 4. Scholarship Amount Details HSP Huygens Scholarship 25/10/2009
One of the important documents you need to sent with your HSP Huygens application is an official HSP Huygens nomination letter, written by Leiden University. The faculty of your study program should, based on the HSP Huygens requirements, agree with your candidacy for a HSP Huygens Scholarship. If they don’t, Leiden University will not provide you with a HSP Huygens nomination letter. This means that you cannot apply for a HSP Huygens scholarship. For whom? Excellent students from all nationalities in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies Excellent students from all nationalities who are studying towards a master’s degree. The fellowship program awards dissertation fellowships to African doctoral students enrolled in sub-Saharan Africa universities who are conducting health-systems or sexuality related research. By providing financial and research support, the program aims at encouraging doctoral students to pursue their training in the region, and thus contribute to the quality of university education in sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, this project aims to: . Shorten the amount of time it takes to complete doctoral studies . Strengthen the quality of these dissertations and the candidates . Retain a new generation of highly skilled and locally trained African scholars in research, policy and academic positions within the region Eligibility The African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowships are awarded to advanced doctoral students who are within two years of completing their doctoral thesis at an African university. The fellowships target individuals whose research show great promise of making substantive contribution to strengthening health systems or show great promise of enhancing the understanding of governance, equity, health or population-related issues in Africa. The program primarily supports doctoral research (including data collection). Coursework is not considered for support. 2010 Call for Applications This year, the program is offering 15 fellowships to doctoral students in sub-Saharan African Universities. Students from Francophone countries can download both the 2010 Call and application form in French and may submit their applications in French as well. Academic Scholarships Trustee Scholarships Purpose: To recognize applicants with strong academic records and programs. Scholarship Amounts: Up to $80,000, distributed equally over four years of study at Allegheny (i.e. up to $20,000 per year). Financial need is not a consideration. Renewal: Trustee Scholarships renew automatically for up to four years of full-time enrollment at Allegheny or in an Allegheny-sponsored off-campus study program. No minimum GPA is required to renew the scholarship. Eligibility and Selection: Students recognized as Trustee Scholars usually rank in the top 25% of their high school class (or otherwise excelling in class work and other activities when the school does not rank) and have SAT/ACT scores consistent with their academic performance. Allegheny values students who balance their academic excellence with other distinctive activities. The top scholarship is awarded to the very best of the best, typically to only the top 5% of our applicants each year. A limited number of Trustee Scholarships are available to highly qualified transfer students. Transfer applicants are also expected to earn a cumulative college grade point average of 3.0. To Apply: Complete Allegheny's regular Application for Admission by February 15. Trustee Scholarship award winners will be notified via mail regarding their eligibility and amount of award. Financial Considerations For the 2009-2010 academic year, the comprehensive fee, which includes tuition, room and board, and college fees, comes to $42,000. Books, supplies, health insurance and personal expenses would total approximately $4,200, for a total estimated annual cost of $46,200. After acceptance to the College, a deposit of $400 is required to hold your place in the class. This deposit is due by May 1 for the fall semester. Scholarship Opportunities Allegheny College has generous assistance available to international students. All international applicants will be considered for scholarships ranging from $5,000 to half- and three quarter-tuition. In addition, international students may be eligible for larger financial aid awards, including and up to full-tuition scholarships. All international applicants, in order to be considered for these scholarships, must submit both the International Student Financial Aid Form and the Certification of Finance Form with their applications. We recommend that while completing the Certification of Finances, international applicants plan on a five-percent increase in costs annually. Fully funded University International Research Scholarships are available for high quality international students who will be commencing PhD research study in Session 2010-2011 for study in any Faculty at the University of Leeds. Applications are logged by the Postgraduate Scholarships Office and passed on to the relevant Schools for initial consideration. After a School selection process, recommendations for award are then made at Faculty level and final approval given by the University Scholarships Group. Applicants can expect to be notified of the outcome of their application by the end of March 2010. The University will publish the names of the successful applicants within the University and externally on the University website.
