Tropical Biology Association (TBA) The TBA Postgraduate Scholarships are annually offered by the Tropical Biology Association to its African alumni which are funded through a consortium of TBA funders. The scholarships are to help African alumni undertake postgraduate studies after they have attended TBA courses. They are part of the TBA alumni follow up support programme designed to promote human resource development and strengthen professional expertise among African biologists in biodiversity conservation and research. Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa is pleased to announce its call for applications for the 2010 Moremi Leadership Empowerment and Development (MILEAD) Fellows Program for young African women leaders. The MILEAD Fellows Program is a one-year leadership development program designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and succeed in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole. The one-year program targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that help them tackle issues affecting women in their communities. The MILEAD fellowship will be awarded to 25 young women with exceptional qualities who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession. To be eligible for the one-year program, an applicant must be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora; agree to participate in all required activities related to MILEAD including a three-week residential Summer Institute in July-August; and commit implement a community project as part of the program. Applicants must be between 19 - 25 years of age. Specific requirements of the program and related dates are outlined in the application package. Please note that this is not a full-time fellowship. Selected candidates may remain full time students or work full time for the program duration, except during the 3–week summer institute. The 3-week summer institute is an intensive and full-time residential program and all fellows will be required to attend. The rest of the program involves community-based, online and other distance activities. Applications are welcome from young African women living in any part of Africa and the Diaspora. The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) welcomes project proposals. Through this call, EDCTP intends to identify and support senior researchers capable of building and leading research groups at Sub-Saharan African institutions that will be internationally competitive and capable of winning grants from international funding bodies. This grant is both available for researchers already working in Africa as well as those looking to return to the continent (re-entry grant). For this grant, linkage or affiliations with EDCTP funded regional Networks of Excellence is not mandatory, however, south-south networking is strongly recommended for all funded projects. Excellence scholarships for PhD students to participate in YES’ PhD Program "Global Food Security" at the University of Hohenheim, Germany. The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program "exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation", which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ). The Center’s mission is to create and support effective and innovative scientific contributions in research and teaching, as well as to give policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and national and international development and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of sustainable food availability, food access, food use and food utilization. More information is available at: www.foodsecurity.de Scholarship description FSC awards up to 12 scholarships for PhD students from developing countries (see DAC list) for a period of 36 months, beginning August 01, 2010. There will be up to 2 scholarships offered to PhD students from developed countries. The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. The successful candidates will receive scholarships for participating in FSC’s Young Excellence School to conduct their doctorates. The scholarship is given for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The monthly grant is 1,000 Euros in 2010. In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from Hohenheim. Health insurance and other potential costs must be paid for privately. The fellowship holders are invited to take part in an education programme that will encompass both talks with political decision-makers, personalities from civil society and industry, academics and journalists from both countries and will give participants the opportunity to take part in political and cultural events and excursions. The participants are to contribute towards implementing the programme by assisting in organising lectures and facilitating group discussions. They will also draw up an interdisciplinary strategy paper on an academic subject that will be prepared in Germany and will be written between September 2010 and April 2011. The event is directed at students and young graduates from Germany, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Applicants should be between 21 and 28 years old and be studying or have a degree in political science, modern history, international relations, economics, business administration, African studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies or law. The seminar will be delivered in English; the number of participants is limited to 24, twelve from African countries and twelve from Germany. The Federal Agency for Civic Education will cover the costs. Furthermore, there will be a compulsory preparatory seminar for the German participants in June 2010. Students and graduates who are interested can apply to the Federal Agency for Civic Education by submitting an essay comprising a maximum of three A4 pages (approx. 6,000 characters) written in English. The essay must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae in tabular form, a letter of motivation comprising no more than one A4 page and a photograph (the following information must be provided: surname, first name, gender, date of birth, profession, job/field of study, place of study, place of work and place of residence). Applicants must also issue a declaration stating that they wrote the essay without any help from third parties. Please note that the Federal Agency for Civic Education is not able to cover costs for obtaining visas or medical care. The acceptance of African participants to the programme only becomes final, when the German Embassy in the participant’s home country has issued the relevant visa. The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study. Geographic Scope The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can help with processing applications and interviewing applicants. Selection Criteria The main criteria for selecting award winners are: 1) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest. Age Limit Preference is given to students under 30 years of age. Financial Assistance The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources. Loan Conditions Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation. Application Procedures The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They should not be sent to Geneva. The deadline for submission of applications is March 31, although in certain countries internal deadlines may be earlier. The CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program is dedicated to improving the health of people in developing countries by further strengthening international collaborative efforts between researchers. This year, the Program will enable promising scientists and clinicians from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Afica to be mentored by prominent Canadian researchers. They will be exposed to some of the best science, laboratories and training environments in Canada. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Eligible research areas include clinical epidemiology, population health, clinical trials, health sciences, global health, and areas which can have an impact on the health of people in and Low/Middle Income Countries. Among other eligibility criteria, the scholars must: – be committed to research in a health related area which will help people in a developing country; – be in the early stage of their careers (and have no more than 10 years of research training experience); – be a PhD, MD or health professional in an eligible research area with an excellent track record; and – be dedicated to developing national and international collaborations in their area of research. The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge as well as didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need of highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of farm animal breeding and genetics. Why choose this programme? If you are well motivated and interested in animal breeding, statistical genetics and genomics, you have completed a BSc or equivalent degree in Animal Science or related fields and good knowledge in English, the EM-ABG is perfect for you! What will you gain? The EM-ABG is a two-year MSc programme which starts with an orientation period for all students in Wageningen.
