PhD Scholars Programme in Cancer Biology 28/10/2010
The overall objective of the PhD Scholars Programme is to provide high-quality PhD training in cancer biology. The scientific programme addresses the following areas:
The PhD training programme begins with a structured first year that includes taught elements, general scientific training, and specific training in the biological and clinical aspects of cancer. A major part of the first year for each student will be three, twelve-week laboratory rotations. The students will then choose the project and supervisor with whom they will carry out research for their PhD thesis. Throughout the programme there will be research seminars with international speakers and advanced training workshops. Students will be encouraged and supported to attend conferences, either nationally or internationally, to present their work as they progress through the programme. The PhD Scholars Programme in Cancer Biology is directed and managed by a steering committee, composed of four scientists and three clinicians, who collectively have extensive experience in research and PhD training. They, together with a full-time training coordinator, facilitate and monitor the progress of the students through the programme, assemble thesis committees, and provide ongoing mentoring, in conjunction with the student's PhD supervisor. The Scholars who graduate from this programme will be equipped with the skills to carry out leading research in cancer biology or in related disciplines. For more information, please contact Dr. Kellie Dean, Training Coordinator, at phdcancerbiology@ucc.ie Application Procedure Applications for the 2011 PhD Scholars Programme in Cancer Biology are now being accepted. It is the first African-European Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Migration Studies. The first cohort will set out to study in September 2011. EMMIR is jointly run by three African and four European universities, facilitated by a wider network of partners. Various associate organsiations on the regional, national and international level provide significant assistance for student internships and graduate's employment. The quality of the programme is constantly evaluated by an international board of experts. EMMIR is a unique study programme focusing on migration through an intercultural approach. It provides profound theoretical skills in migration studies combined with field work in Europe and Africa. It is designed as a multidisciplinary programme that addresses important contemporary issues in an emerging field of study. EMMIR includes study periods in both, Europe and Africa. Students' mobility is understood as a key to mutual understanding of different views and cultures of migration and movement and will sharpen intercultural sensitivity. EMMIR students become acquainted with different cultures and academic traditions and gain knowledge about migration issues in internships. They will gain profound skills and specialise in of the four programme foci, this will provide them with excellent chances for employment in national and international governmental and private sector organisations or in academia. Graduates will be awarded a joint degree by the EMMIR partner universities. >>Apply now! Application deadline: 31 December 2010 Source: www.emmir.org/index.php The primary social and economic value of modern societies is knowledge. For this reason, mastering Information technology for structured or unstructured information recorded in Datawarehouses, such as the Web, and containing dormant knowledge is essential to the development of both individual and society. Data mining and knowledge management (DMKM) has become essential for improving the competitiveness of businesses and increasing access to knowledge. DMKM still comes up, however, against major scientific and technological obstacles. This EM MC’s degree in DMKM proposes specialized training in this field. The consortium is composed of six universities among four countries: France (University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6, University of Lyon Lumière Lyon 2, Polytec’Nantes), Romania (University Polithenica of Bucharest), Italy (University of East Piedmont) and Spain (Technical University of Catalonia). The Master in DMKM is based on experience in multi-site teaching gained from the Master’s degree in Knowledge Extraction from Data, which has been running since 1999 within three members of the consortium. The Master in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in the fields of computer science, mathematics or statistics, as well as a good level of English (TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure. Classes are taught in English and the course is composed of 18 modules of around sixty hours each. The course runs over 4 semesters. The first semester is devoted to basic training and includes subjects in mathematics, statistics, databases, etc., whereas the two following ones are devoted to acquire two specialties among six ones, such as Complex Data Mining, Information retrieval, Knowledge acquisition and management, etc. The fourth semester is targeted to the writing of a dissertation in either a laboratory or a company. Language classes will also be provided to ensure that students integrate as well as possible in socio-cultural terms in the host country. Each student must spend (6-12) months in at least two of the four countries. Students that have obtained 120 ECTS will automatically obtain national Master degrees from the countries in which they have studied. Classes are transmitted via video-conferencing. They are also recorded and accessible online. Students can benefit, on their site of residence, from support in the form of tutoring for each course. Tuition fees are 4,000 €/year for European students and 8,000 €/year for other students. All candidates may apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarships.
