14th August – 4th September 2010

An Initiative of the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education

The Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb) is granting fellowships to students and young graduates enabling them to take part in a four-week seminar to be held from 14th August to 4th September 2010 in Germany and in March 2011 in South Africa.

The fellowship holders are invited to take part in an education programme that will encompass both talks with political decision-makers, personalities from civil society and industry, academics and journalists from both countries and will give participants the opportunity to take part in political and cultural events and excursions. The participants are to contribute towards implementing the programme by assisting in organising lectures and facilitating group discussions. They will also draw up an interdisciplinary strategy paper on an academic subject that will be prepared in Germany and will be written between September 2010 and April 2011.

The event is directed at students and young graduates from Germany, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Applicants should be between 21 and 28 years old and be studying or have a degree in political science, modern history, international relations, economics, business administration, African studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies or law.

The seminar will be delivered in English; the number of participants is limited to 24, twelve from African countries and twelve from Germany. The Federal Agency for Civic Education will cover the costs. Furthermore, there will be a compulsory preparatory seminar for the German participants in June 2010.

Students and graduates who are interested can apply to the Federal Agency for Civic Education by submitting an essay comprising a maximum of three A4 pages (approx. 6,000 characters) written in English. The essay must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae in tabular form, a letter of motivation comprising no more than one A4 page and a photograph (the following information must be provided: surname, first name, gender, date of birth, profession, job/field of study, place of study, place of work and place of residence).

Applicants must also issue a declaration stating that they wrote the essay without any help from third parties. The acceptance of African participants to the programme only becomes final, when the German Embassy in the participant’s home country has issued the relevant visa. There is no possibility to legally claim the participation in the programme.

A further condition for receiving a grant is that applicants must be able to participate for the entire period.

The application process is now open. If you are interested in participating in the International Media Studies program, please send your application. Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2010.

The Master’s Program International Media Studies is a four-semester, full-time program for further education. It is a joint project from the University of Bonn, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster with its headquarters in Bonn.

The bilingual Master’s Program offers a unique course offer given the current development of global media and the connection between media and cooperative development. Students from around the world will benefit from the inclusion of partners and the unparalleled mix of research, lectures and practical experience.

The program combines topics like media and development, journalism, communication science and media economics, while developing practical skills and competencies that are important for the world of media.

Philosophy
Free and independent media is a significant factor for a functioning democracy, social justice and the protection of human rights. The Master’s Program is based on the belief that there is a connection between democracy and development, between the freedom of opinion and democracy as well as between free media and development. The prerequisite for the establishment of a functioning, free media system are journalists who realize their role as a critical observer and reporter. This can only be guaranteed when they are professionally trained and feel obligated by a set of journalistic ethics.

By training journalists academically, the Master’s Program is therefore a targeted step towards making the media spokespeople for openness within democracy.

The courses are based on the values of democracy, freedom and conflict prevention, civil society and good government – representative of the connection between the media and cooperative development.

Objective
Students will acquire the knowledge and skills that are essential for a journalistic career. They will be able to meet specific occupational requirements with expertise and communicative independence.

The Master’s Program trains students – personally and professionally – to be competent journalists and prepare them for a challenging role as expert or manager in the media sector.

Target Group
The program is targeted at students from around the world that want to work in a position of responsibility in journalism or the communications sector. It especially addresses journalists-in-training, media representatives from radio, TV, online and print and communication experts.

Those interested must have already completed an academic program (bachelor’s or equivalent) and have at least one year of professional media experience.

The program will be bilingual (English and German), whereby English will be the prevalent course language.

Especially targeted at:
  • Media representatives from radio, TV, online and print
  • Journalists-in-training, especially from electronic media

The world is in motion: people and ideas, products, technologies and diseases are travelling between regions and continents. Cities and cultures as well as family and labour market relations are changing in these processes of globalization. Nation states are less capable to regulate policy areas independently. The movement of people is only one factor among others generating change, but one whose importance will rise over the next years.

Migrants are settling into societies that are themselves transforming. Integration thus becomes a moving target. Everyone needs to be prepared to embrace change. Some migrants will also keep multi-stranded relations with their countries of origin, thereby building transnational spaces; others will after little time move on to third countries. All of them settle into motion.

How can migrants and their receiving and sending countries reap the benefits of this movement of people? Which structural and procedural conditions have to be in place to take advantage of diversity? And what are the challenges for the individual, the migrant family, the regions and countries migrants come from as well as the places of reception? With its Bucerius Ph.D. Scholarship Program “Settling Into Motion”, the ZEIT-Stiftung seeks to address these questions, each year focusing on a different topic.

Requirements
  • Applicants must be Ph.D. students of - in a broad sense - social sciences.
  • Deadline 25 February 2010 for a stipend starting in August 2010.
  • Please apply online with Ph.D. proposal and two references (www.zeit-stiftung.de/settling-into-motion)

GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Universität Hamburg, Regional Powers

Fundamental shifts within the global and regional architecture of power are expected in the coming decades. However, the new global and regional configurations of the twenty-first century are currently only partially understood. The newly established Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers analyzes the emerging power shifts among non-European regions and states, related conflicts with respect to regional leadership within these regions as well as competition for spheres of influence, and the global formation of governance structures among new regional powers and the "old" powers of the OECD world.

Within the school, applications are being invited for 8 Ph.D. scholarships starting 1 April 2010, for a duration of three years. The programme is open to young academics in the fields of international relations/international political economy and comparative area studies. Applicants must have an excellent M.A. or equivalent degree in hand by the time of appointment. We strongly encourage young candidates from abroad to apply.

Interested persons should send a letter of interest, their CV, an abstract and the table of contents of their M.A. thesis or diploma, a longer (max. 10 pages) outline of their planned Ph.D. project, copies of all relevant academic certificates (M.A., B.A., etc.), and two letters of recommendation to the following address: Regional Powers, GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Neuer Jungfernstieg 21, 20354 Hamburg

The GIGA promotes gender equality and actively encourages applications from women. Among equally qualified applicants, women will receive preferential consideration in those areas in which they are underrepresented.
