The Japanese Association of University Women takes pleasure in announcing its 2012 International Fellowships Programme for women who are carrying out or would like to carry out independent research or advanced study at the post-graduate level in Japan. The period of the award will be for 3-6 months within the period 15 September 2012 to 31 March 2013. Please read the Guidelines below before applying on the application form provided. AMOUNT OF FELLOWSHIP 500,000–1,000,000 per grantee. The amount granted will vary depending on duration of stay in Japan and the nature of the work. One-third of the amount will be given to the grantee upon arrival in Japan. Introduction to the scholarshipThe Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho) offers a scholarship in selected fields, called the Special Scholarship for International Doctoral Programs. The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University will accept eight new Ph.D. course students under this program from the year 2012. This program has several attractive features—for example, the official language will be English(Japanese language skill will not be required); and the fact that all tuition fees will be waived. Interested applicants should carefully read the rules and conditions in the guidelines for admission before submitting their applications. The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for ABDs and recent PhDs provides promising and highly qualified researchers in the humanities and social sciences with the opportunity to conduct extended research at leading universities and research institutions in Japan. Fellowship terms are for single continuous stays from 1 to 12 months (short-term) or 12 to 24 months (long-term). Short-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013, and long-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2012 and September 30, 2012. JSPS currently provides round-trip international airfare for fellows originating in the U.S., insurance coverage for accidents and illness, a monthly stipend of ¥362,000 for PhDs (¥200,000 for ABDs), a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000, and eligibility for an additional ¥1,500,000 annually for research expenses for stays of 12 to 24 months. The program offers Master's (two years) and Doctoral (three years) courses leading to the corresponding degrees. Lectures and instructions for research are given generally in English. Japanese language courses are optionally available. Scholarship The students enrolled in this program will be awarded by scholarship from MEXT, Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The scholarship covers living expenses and a roundtrip air ticket. Awardees are also exempted from both entrance fees and tuition fees. Eligibility An applicant who is eligible for admission to the Master’s course must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, for admission to the doctoral course must hold a Master’s Degree or its equivalent. Launch of new cycle of UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Fellowships for young researchers UNESCO is inviting young researchers from developing countries to apply for grants through the UNESCO-Keizo Obuchi Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) financed by Japan.This programme named after the former prime minister of Japan, offers a total of 20 research scholarships valued between US$6,000 to US$10,000 each. The scholarships are awarded to post-graduate university researchers (holding a Masters degree or an equivalent qualification) in one of four fields: environment (with particular emphasis on Water Sciences), intercultural dialogue, information and communication technologies, and peaceful conflict resolution. Young researchers from 140 countries are invited to submit their applications through National Commissions for UNESCO which will nominate a maximum of 2 candidates per country. The applications should reach UNESCO Headquarters in Paris before 13 January 2012. The World Bank annually awards five scholarships to the PPT program. The first level of screening of candidates will be done at Yokohama National University. The final decision regarding scholarship recipients will be made by the World Bank. The scholarship covers a monthly allowance of JPY170,000 (the amount is subject to change), and a round-trip air ticket to Japan plus a travel allowance of JPY60,000. The monthly stipend is intended to cover living, commuting and other incidental expenses during the student's study period. The next scholarship program runs from April 2012 to March 2014. This cannot be changed under any circumstances. In addition, the scholarship covers tuition, entrance examination and admission fees. Travel expenses for some program-sponsored field trips are also included. JOINT JAPAN/WORLD BANK GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EMPLOYMENT POLICY FOR JJ/WBGSP SCHOLARS The Grant Agreement between the World Bank and the Government of Japan states: "It is anticipated that scholars would return to their countries to apply their enhanced knowledge and skills towards helping accelerate the pace of economic and social development." To maintain high levels of home return, it has been an established agreement between the Government of Japan (the sole Program donor) and the World Bank that JJ/WBGSP scholars are not entitled to seek employment of any kind at the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for three years after they finish their academic program. The three-year employment restriction applies to World Bank and IMF headquarters and field offices. This restriction covers regular staff appointments, short term consulting contracts, and all other types of employment during the three-year period. The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality (CSSI) invites applications from excellent scholars for a few postdoctoral positions. (The number of the positions depends on the center’s budget for the next academic year.) The center pursues development of new theories and methodologies on social stratification and inequality with emphasis on studies of rational choice theory, minorities (including gender stratification and inequality), East Asia, transnational migration (especially focusing on “newcomers” in Japan), and fairness. Faculty members of the center are sociologists, social psychologists, cultural anthropologists, religious anthropologists, a historian, and economists, and they study social stratification and inequality from various viewpoints. In addition, the CSSI conducts comparative studies of absolute poverty with the Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality. Applicants should hold doctoral degrees or show academic performance equivalent to holders of doctoral degrees. They should have a good command of English. Postdoctoral fellows of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are not eligible for this application. The successful candidates will be expected to work under the supervision of the faculty members of the center from April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012. (The starting date is negotiable.) Though the initial contract ends on March 31, 2012, the contract will be extended for one more year. The salary of a successful candidate will be 270,000 – 350,000 yen per month depending on his/her academic career. Travel and housing allowances will be paid to those who are eligible for them. Grants for excellent research projects proposed by the successful candidates will be provided. The center also academically and financially supports their presentations at international conferences.
