On behalf of the Toshiba International Foundation, the EAJS Council selects two to three candidates for a fellowship to undertake research in Japan. The next application deadline is 30 April 2010. Applications are invited for three Toshiba International Foundation scholarships for a three-month stay in Japan to be completed by the end of March 2011. There are three scholarships, generously funded by the Toshiba International Foundation, and each is worth 7000,- Euro. Applicants must be graduate students or their equivalent who have completed four or more years of full-time study, and they must be specialising in some branch of Japanese studies at an institution in Europe. Applications should consist of a CV, a brief statement (not more than 300 words) of the project for which they wish to pursue their research in Japan, and a letter of support from the student’s supervisor or adviser, who should submit the application on the student’s behalf. Please note that students are only eligible to apply for these scholarships after they have arrived in Japan and have begun their studies at Kyoto University. Outline of the Scholarships for Kyoto University Privately-Financed International Students There are two types of scholarships available to Kyoto University privately-financed students: those for which the applicant submits an application through the University, and those for which the applicant submits an application directly to the sponsoring organization. Application requirements vary among the scholarships, so students are advised to read the application guidelines carefully. Notice that the selection process for these scholarships is very competitive as the financial resources of the scholarship programs are limited and the number of applicants is increasing. Announcements regarding scholarships received by the University are usually distributed to all applicable faculties/graduate schools. The administration offices generally post these announcements to students on their bulletin boards. Students who wish to apply for these scholarships are advised to pay close attention to the notices posted by their faculty/graduate school offices. Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship (Domestic Selection) Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarships are funded by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and technology (MEXT), Japan. Domestic Selection is available only to privately-financed students currently studying at Kyoto University. In addition, to be eligible to apply, a student must meet one of the following criteria. Applications should be submitted through the University, which will select candidates to recommend to MEXT. For details, please inquire at the administration office of your Faculty or Graduate School after entering Kyoto University. 1. The student is currently enrolled in an undergraduate program and is expected to be enrolled in the final year of the same program on April 1 of the forthcoming year. 2. The student is currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, or is currently studying as a research student, and is expected to be enrolled in a graduate degree (Master’s, professional, or Doctoral) program on April 1 of the forthcoming year. 3. The student is currently enrolled in a graduate degree (Master’s, professional, or Doctoral) program. Honors Scholarship (Gakushushoreihi) Privately financed international students currently studying at a university in Japan are eligible to apply for an Honors Scholarship which Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers to help them with their academic work and research in Japan. Research Topics The content must include surveys and/or individual research and/or collaborative research, in the fields of either the humanities or the social sciences. The research topic must be one that is appropriate for visiting Japan (i.e., there should be a reason the fellow wishes to conduct research in Japan). The topic must fulfil at least one of these requirements: 1. It must incorporate Japanese issues into your area of specialization. 2. It must be of mutual interest to Japan – Eastern Europe (including Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus), or Japan - Middle East, or Japan - Africa. 3. It must be an international topic (global issue), related to Japan. Examples of topics are given below (these are only examples; research topics are NOT limited to these): Environment and Development, Peace and Security, Social order/Law enforcement, Globalization of the economy and international cooperation, Corporate Social Responsibility, Education and human resource development, Energy issues, Gender issues, Population problem, etc. Expected Number of Fellows Approx. 20 Fellowship Period The fellows are required to start their fellowship within the period from May 20, 2010, to March 25, 2011. The duration of the fellowship must be between 30days and 60days. * It is advised, however, that fellows should avoid visiting Japan from December 20, 2010 through January 6, 2011, because meeting and travel arrangements are virtually impossible. Obligations of the Fellows 1. Fellows will independently conduct their own individual research activities on their chosen topic as described in the application. 2. Fellows are expected to submit a final project report to the Japan Foundation within 1 month after returning back home. 3. It is desirable that Fellows will give presentations about their research during their stay in Japan. Contents of Fellowship Award 1. Round-trip, discount economy-class air ticket (PEX). 2. Allowance to cover accommodation, meals, local transportation, research expenses and other incidentals (17,000 Japanese yen per day). 3. Insurance: Please note that the insurance coverage provided will be in accordance with the general guidelines set forth by the Foundation. 4. Domestic Transportation: Domestic transportation expenses within Japan will be provided only when a Fellow needs to travel no less than 100 km from the airport to his/her site of research. 5. The Japan Foundation will directly pay the supervisor fee (JPY 50,000) to the academic advisor. 6. The Japan Foundation will directly pay the assistant fee (JPY 30,000) to the assistant to the fellow. Please note that the need for an assistant will be determined by the advisor.
