A list of all universities and university colleges in Sweden (higher education institutions) and links to their websites in English can be found on the Swedish National Agency of Higher Education's website at the following link: List of higher education institutions Type of employment: Limit of tenure, until 28 February 2015 Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Political Science, Lund First day of employment: 1 March 2011 Official Records Number: SPA 2010/285 Areas of research The postgraduate position is part of the strategic research initiative Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate (BECC), specifically the research theme on Governance and Economics of Natural Resources. This theme critically evaluates synergies and trade-offs between policies addressing climate change, biodiversity protection, forestry and ecosystem resilience as well as formulates policies and strategies that lead to an integrated policy management. Carbon accounting is a concept that draws attention to the conditions under which climate governance becomes possible. Carbon accounting highlights the necessity of the ‘counting of carbon’ and the measures that enable stocks and flows of carbon to be taken into account. Carbon accounting is thus concerned with the ways in which carbon can be measured, quantified, modelled and statistically aggregated, for example in forest and soils, and the translation of this knowledge into international negotiations, policies and political institutions. The credibility of a future international climate treaty hinges on the development of appropriate measures that guarantees effective greenhouse gas mitigation efforts in the post 2012 era. In the coming years, the privatisation and commodification of carbon sequestration services is likely to expand through, for example, negotiations on forests and land-use under the UN’s climate convention (UNFCCC). Job assignments The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits (which is equivalent to four years of study full time). It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis. He/she will normally have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 per cent of full time. The Ph.D. student is expected to carry out research that contributes to the aims of the BECC. Areas of research could be e.g. forest carbon commodification and governance, international politics of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), social dimensions of accounting for carbon in soils and forests, scientific uncertainty and the mutual constitution of scientific knowledge and political institutions. The task at hand is to investigate if this was the case in other major upwelling areas as well. The project involves: sediment sampling, different kinds of laboratory work such as grain-size analyses, analyses of biogenic silica, organic carbon together with a large amount of micropaleontological analyses, foremost benthic foraminifera but also other groups of microfossils may come to mind. Participation in sea-going expeditions might be required. The project belongs to LUCCI (Center for Studies of Carbon Cycle and Climate Interactions, LUCCI) at Lund University. Eligibility/Entry Requirements The applicant is expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in Earth Sciences with a strong focus on Quaternary Geology or Marine Geology. A degree in biology with additional courses in Quaternary/Marine Geology might also be considered. The applicant needs to have finished a master or bachelor thesis at the time of appointment. Experience with scientific publication in English is an asset together with experience with micropaleontological work. Lab experience is of advantage although not strictly required. Applications for this position should include a letter stating the reasons for applying and brief statements about ambitions in relation to the project. The application should also include a CV with general personal information and details of previous studies/work. Basis of Assessment The position is guaranteed for four years. PhD studentship in Geobiosphere Science at the Department of Earth and Ecosystem Science, Faculty of Science Reference Number: NPA 2010/107 Worker's unions at Lund University: OFR, SACO, and SEKO Project description: Fluvial transport of amorphous silica The PhD project will investigate the transport of amorphous silica by rivers to the world's oceans. Amorphous silica (ASi) mostly originates from biological uptake by plants. Plants take up dissolved silicate and deposit it as an amorphous form of silica called phytoliths. Phytoliths and ASi formed in soils enters aquatic ecosystems through litterfall and erosion. In addition, diatoms in aquatic ecosystems also take up dissolved silicate and deposit it as ASi. There is a wide range of concentrations found in rivers depending upon the soils and vegetation in the watershed, and algal growth in lakes and rivers. The amount of ASi transported by rivers to the world's oceans is poorly known. The Ph.D. student will investigate the flux of ASi from some of the world's largest rivers. The student will participate in several expeditions to sample rivers for a variety of constituents, including ASi. Some of the expeditions will be carried out through collaboration in on-going studies. The goal of the project is to establish a global estimate of the amount of ASi inputs from rivers. This project is financed by the Faculty of Sciences at Lund University. Qualifications: The applicants are expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in natural sciences. A degree in subjects like Geology, Geochemistry, Geography or Aquatic Ecology is preferable. Documented experience in field studies is an advantage. Experience of scientific publication in English is an asset. The position is guaranteed for four years. The starting date is negotiable, but the project should commence 1 October. Applications for this position should include a letter stating the reasons for applying and brief statements about ambitions in relation to the project. The application should also include a letter with motivation on why the student wants to undertake a Ph.D., a CV with general personal information and details of previous study/work record. Additional information: The position is restricted to four years. Formal regulations for postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Science are provided at: http://www.science.lu.se/o.o.i.s/11729 PhD studentships can only be offered to applicants who are granted admission to postgraduate studies. In the selection procedure, the ability to complete the education according to the study plan for postgraduate studies is considered. Apart from postgraduate education, the successful applicant may be assigned other duties within undergraduate teaching, research, and administrative work according to special regulations. The Faculty of Science considers gender and equity aspects in the recruitment process. Women are particularly encouraged to apply, as the majority of PhD students within the Faculty are men.
