PhD student position in Environmental Chemistry with focus on: Bioavailability of pollutants and effects on ecosystem function. Announced by the Department of Chemistry (www.chemistry.umu.se) ECOCHANGE is a new governmental strategic marine research program at Umeå University (UmU) in collaboration with the Linnaeus University in Kalmar. Ecosystem dynamics in the Baltic Sea is studied in a climate change perspective. Effects of climate related changes on lower and higher trophic levels are investigated in a north-south gradient in the Baltic Sea, as well as effects on bioavailiability of pollutants and their potential to change food web function. It is an interdisciplinary project spanning from ecology and chemistry to environmental sciences. Project description The project is focused on effects of climate change on the bioavailability of environmental pollutants and on effects of pollutants on lower trophic levels; from microbes to metazooplankton. Effects of changes in temperature, precipitation, inflow of organic carbon and salinity will be tested. The studies will comprise sorption and bioavailability tests as well as more complex microcosm experiments. The selected chemicals will be biologically active environmental pollutants, e.g. health drugs and biocides. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) will be used as reference substances. The project includes advanced chemical analyses of these substances. Through RWI’s international development projects and through its various research initiatives, RWI strives to be a meeting point for theory and practice in the implementation of human rights. To further support these efforts RWI is offering an eight month NHRI Fellowship. The aim of the fellowship programme is to expand the understanding of the role NHRIs play in promoting and protecting human rights, to support research associated with NHRIs, and to help facilitate dialogue between NHRI scholars and practitioners. The Fellow will have the opportunity to further her/his professional development by conducting research related to NHRIs and interacting with leading human rights scholars and expert NHRI practitioners from around the world. It is expected that the Fellow will be based at RWI for the eight month fellowship period and that she/he will not have any other professional commitments during that time period. The Fellow is also required during the course of the fellow-ship to complete a research project resulting in a written work. The Fellow will form part of the RWI research and academic community and be expected to contribute to RWI NHRI related lectures, seminars, and workshops, and to provide feedback on RWI related NHRI initiatives that are ongoing or under development. Funding and Facilities The NHRI Fellow will be provided with a stipend sufficient to fully cover all necessary personal expense in Sweden. In addition to the stipend, the Fellow will be provided with a modest travel allowance to support costs travelling to/from Lund, office space, computer/Internet connections, acute medical insurance, and access to the RWI library and its unique collection of NHRI materials. Eligibility Human rights practitioners and scholars with in-depth knowledge of and/or experience working with NHRIs are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to scholars who hold post graduate degrees, and to practitioners with law degrees (LLB or JD) and a solid track record working with or for NHRIs. The Fellow must be able to write and speak English fluently. The objective of the scholarship program is to promote democratic, economic and social development through supporting know-how and transfer of knowledge to advanced students within areas in which Sweden is at the forefront of academic research. Countries The program is only available to citizens of the following countries: Albania, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mali, Moçambique, Moldova, Rwanda, Serbia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. About 40 scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2010/2011. Important dates Prior to applying for a scholarship, application to the master’s degree program must be made via the online application service for master’s programs in Sweden at www.studera.nu. T he service opens on December 1, 2009. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2010. The application procedure for the actual scholarships will open in February 2010. The list of applicants who will receive a scholarship will be announced at the Swedish Institute’s website, www.si.se and here at Studyinsweden.se in the beginning of June 2010. Scholarship benefits and period The scholarship amount is SEK 8,000 per month and the scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in fall semester 2010. The scholarships are usually granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that study results are satisfactory.
