The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research and provides the perfect environment for aspiring scientists to begin to realise their research ambitions.

The winners of the Sanger Institute Prize will be offered an all expenses paid* 3-month internship in an Institute laboratory during the summer of 2010. To explore the research undertaken at the Sanger Institute please visit our academic faculty pages.

The Sanger Institute Prize is an opportunity to experience the very cutting edge of genomic research and the competition is open to all undergraduates with a strong interest in the genomics field and a good command of English. We particularly welcome entries from those studying in the developing countries.

The 2010 competition will be run as a two stage process.

Stage one: expression of interest The expression of interest should consist of:
  • a short (150-200 word) statement about what the entrant would gain from an internship at the Sanger Institute;
  • an up-to-date CV (in addition to the standard information, your CV should also include: University, Department, subjects studied and the date you started undergraduate education);
  • names and contact details of two referees, including one academic reference (for example a tutor/advisor).
Entries should be submitted by email to phs@sanger.ac.uk by 19 March 2010.

Stage two: essay The expressions of interest will be reviewed by the Sanger Institute Prize Fund Board of Trustees and, during March 2010, those shortlisted will be invited to submit an essay. The title of the essay will be provided and the essayist will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and insight into genetics and/or genomics as well as a proficiency in the use of the English language. The deadline for the receipt of the essay is likely to be around mid-April 2010 and the winner will be notified by the end of May 2010. The winner will be expected to take up their internship during summer 2010.

The judges' decision will be final and no further correspondence will be entered into.

LIDC is contributing thousands of pounds towards field costs for five three-year PhD Studentships. The funds will support research projects in a range of innovative and specialised areas including using mobile phones to help monitor infectious disease, analysing sexual behaviour among young women in South Africa, and exploring land and legal issues in post-conflict countries in Africa. They will supplement the five development Studentships, out of a total of 13 Studentships, offered by The Bloomsbury Colleges. Each development project - Studentship plus field costs – is worth more than £60,000.

Successful applicants will begin their PhDs in September/October 2010 as part of the scheme run by The Bloomsbury Colleges (a consortium made up of Birkbeck, Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Royal Veterinary College, School of Oriental and African Studies, and The School of Pharmacy). Each student will be guided by two academics - a lead supervisor from one of the Bloomsbury Colleges and a collaborating supervisor from another. This joint supervision approach will promote interdisciplinary research, a primary aim of LIDC. The Colleges, via the consortium, will provide Studentships to include tuition fees and a stipend. LIDC is committed to contributing a total of approximately £31,000 towards the field research costs across the five development Studentships.

The Centre for Development Informatics (CDI) at the University of Manchester is seeking high-quality PhD and DBA candidates to research topics on ICTs/information systems and socio-economic development.  Some scholarships are available for those starting in September 2010; deadline dates vary but many require application before end February or end March 2010.

The CDI is seeking candidates typically  those with a distinction-level Masters degree from an internationally-recognised university in an appropriate topic (which includes but is not limited to information systems, management, or development); good English skills; and a relevant topic for study backed by a proposal that demonstrates an ability to work with academic theory.

Candidates may choose to study a PhD, for which they will typically be based in Manchester during much of their study, other than a period of fieldwork in a developing country.  Those already in employment may choose the DBA route, taken over a four-or-five-year period and requiring roughly two two-week periods of intensive study/supervision per year in Manchester.  (Scholarships are not available for DBA study.)

Selected candidates will join the Centre for Development Informatics, the largest academic group working on issues of ICTs in developing countries (www.manchester.ac.uk/cdi).  CDI will consider any topic related to development informatics although we have particular priorities at present for work on:
  • m-finance;
  • ICTs and small/micro-enterprise;
  • gender implications of ICTs; IS methodologies in developing countries;
  • e-government;
  • ICTs and civil society organisations;
  • ICT policy; and ICT-based offshoring.
Further details about application and scholarships, please visit the CDI website at www.sed.manchester.ac.uk
