Through a generous donation from an individual, Swansea University is able to offer female students from a developing country a scholarship to cover the cost of course fees. One award will be held at Hull and the other at Huddersfield, with optional access to facilities and research support at the other consortium institution. Applicants, who should hold at least a good undergraduate, and preferably a Master's qualification (or be completing their programme), may offer a proposal from any area of History from the medieval to the contemporary. Hull would, however, particularly welcome proposals which correspond with the department's research strengths in the areas of maritime, environmental, European, military, slavery or business history, while Huddersfield welcomes proposals in English medieval and early modern history and modern British history. Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health. This can include laboratory-based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme. The University of Sheffield has been given a substantial grant to enhance postgraduate research, thanks to the Wolfson Foundation, a charity that awards grants to support and promote excellence in the fields of science and medicine, health, education, and the arts and humanities. Sheffield is one of only nine universities across the UK selected to take part in a pilot funding programme of postgraduate scholarships. Sheffield has been selected due to its track record in research excellence and proven success in attracting promising postgraduate students. The Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships will be available in the broad subject areas of history, literature and languages. The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate the potential to make an impact on one of these fields and to be future academic leaders. Scholarships are offered to students who are nationals of countries outwith the EU for undergraduate study in any subject offered by the University. A minimum of 15 scholarships are available for the 2012-2013 session with each award worth £2,000 per year. Awards are tenable for the duration of the programme of study. Eligibility The scholarships are competitive and awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit. They are awarded to students who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for undergraduate study at the University of Edinburgh. Students already on a programme are not eligible. Applicants must also be nationals of a country outwith the EU. Applying Eligible applicants should complete an online scholarship application. All applications must be submitted no later than 2 April 2012. The Department of Biology will award up to five scholarships to overseas students for undergraduate entry in 2012 (or for deferred entry in 2013). Each scholarship is worth £1000 annually for the duration of the course*, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Successful applicants will be required to meet the balance of the costs of their course. ELIGIBILITY If you are applying for one of the three-year or four-year Biology or Biology specialist degree programmes, and are liable to pay overseas fees, you are eligible to apply. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Scholarship applications should be made on the Biology Overseas Students Scholarship application form. Scholarship applications will be considered from those who have already applied, or have been accepted, for admission on to the course. Completed application forms should arrive at the University no later than 22 June 2012, but candidates should apply as early as possible. Late applications may not be considered. Decisions will be made as soon as possible after the closing date. LSTM has developed the PhD Studentship Programme for candidates with exceptional research credentials. The programme offers up to two fully-funded studentships per year to work within active research groups and based around project proposals submitted by LSTM staff. Studentships are for full time students only and for a period of three years. Students will receive an award equivalent to the Research Council stipend (Home/EU level) and contribution towards their running costs of £5,000 per year. LSTM will fund fees for students supported by these studentships at the Home/EU level. There will be no additional funding available for students requiring international fees. Applicants paying international level fees will need to find additional funding from alternative sources. The studentships will be awarded to excellent students following a rigorous short-listing procedure and interview process.
