The scholarship The Chinese Government is offering 2 Full Scholarships to non-Chinese citizens who are currently at Oxford to study a variety of disciplines, primarily at postgraduate level, at a wide choice of Chinese universities. The scholarships offer up to 7 years of funding, including up to 2 years of Chinese language tuition (if needed). The scholarship covers tuition, lodging, medical insurance, and a certain amount of living stipend. The scheme is administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Embassy in London. The CSC has asked the University of Oxford to nominate 2 candidates to begin study in China in the autumn of 2010. Please read these details carefully. How to apply Please send us the following by 11 December 2009. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 1) To apply, you firstly need to register on the CSC website, and fill in their application form: http://laihua.csc.edu.cn The agency number for the UK is 8261 Print off the application at the end of this stage.
2) The University of Oxford then has to nominate two candidates. We have drawn up an internal Oxford Application Form (below) to capture key information that we need in order to make a shortlist decision. Please complete the following in English. a) The Oxford Application Form and two Letters of Recommendation from Oxford academics. We will require 1 original and 3 copies of both your Application Form and your Letters of Recommendation. We will use this to decide which candidates we nominate. b) The Application Materials detailed on the CSC website, in duplicate, reproduced below. Note that the CSC website uses international terminology, rather than the terminology used at Oxford. Explanations are therefore given in italics and square brackets [ ] after each of these to clarify what the CSC does and does not require at this stage. i) ‘Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship in Chinese or in English’ [i.e. the application form that you printed off from the CSC website when you registered and applied online: http://laihua.csc.edu.cn/] ii) ‘Highest diploma (notarised copy). If applicants are university students or already employed, they should also provide documents of being university students or on-post employees. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.’ [If you are currently an Oxford undergraduate, you can request an on-course transcript: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/schools/examinations/transcripts.shtml ] [If you are a Master’s student, you will need to provide a photocopy of the certificate or transcript from your undergraduate course. We will stamp this for you to ‘notarise’ it.] iii) ‘Applicants for undergraduate studies are required to provide notarised copy of senior high school transcripts [‘A’ level, International baccalaureate,Abitur or equivalent]. Applicants for other categories of studies also need to provide relevant notarised transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.’ iv) ‘A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (no less than 200 words for undergraduates, no less than 400 words for scholars, no less than 500 words for postgraduates).’ [use the Research Plan you submitted for the Oxford Application] v) ‘Applicants overseas for master or doctoral degree studies and senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors.’ [use the Letter of Recommendation you submitted for the Oxford Application]. ‘Applicants who apply in China for master or doctoral degree must submit the Admission Notice of the targeted university. ‘ [you do not need to do this until after you have been nominated by Oxford, as many Chinese universities do not allow you to apply until Jan/Feb] vi) ‘Applicants for music are requested to submit one cassette recording of the applicants’ own work. Applicants for fine arts must submit six color photographs of personal works (two sketches, two color paintings and two other works)’ vii) ‘Applicants under the age of 18 should submit the legal documents of their legal guardians in China.’ viii) ‘Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (printed by Chinese quarantine authority and only for those whose period of studies in China lasts up to six months) filled in English. The medical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months.
