Faculty of Arts
Vacancy number: 23.19.10
Closing date: 1 February 2011

Job description
As a PhD student you will investigate how native speakers of Spanish communicate with native speakers of Dutch in English, under different conditions (requiring formal or informal speech). You will focus on how Spanish speakers adapt their pronunciation, how they prevent or solve miscommuniciation, how intelligible they are, and on how they are judged by native speakers of Dutch.

For this, you will collect a corpus of English produced by Spanish students communicating with a native speaker of Dutch of their own social status, and talking to a group of native speakers of Dutch and Spanish of the same and higher social status. You will provide an orthographic transcription of this corpus and then analyse this corpus with regard to pragmatic aspects (how is miscommunication prevented and solved?), acoustic aspects (what are the qualitative and quantitative aspects of English spoken by Spanish language users) and receptive aspects (what are the consequences of deviant patterns on comprehension and on speaker evaluation?). These corpus studies will be supplemented with experimental studies.

You will write at least four papers on the basis of this research for high-impact international journals, and also present the research at international conferences.

Requirements
You should:
- have a Master's degree in English, Linguistics, or (Business) Communication;
- have excellent writing and speaking skills in English;
- have thorough knowledge of linguistics and be highly motivated;
- be able to quickly learn new theories, research methods, and methods for data analysis.
Knowledge of Spanish and phonetics will be considered as an advantage.
