Faculty of Social Sciences
Maximum Salary: € 4,374 gross/month
Vacancy number: 24.31.10
Closing date: 7 January 2011

Job description
The research project will investigate how children come to perform actions jointly with others during the first few years of life. More specifically, you will focus on the development of two mechanisms: the ability of humans to incorporate other people’s actions into their own action plan and their ability to flexibly coordinate their own actions with those of others. The experiments will be conducted at Radboud University’s Baby Research Center (BRC). Methods available comprise controlled behavioural experiments as well as eye-tracking and EEG.

The research project is funded by a NWO Brain and Cognition grant awarded to the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (DI) at Radboud University Nijmegen and the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN).

Requirements
You have a PhD degree in Psychology or a related discipline, and a strong motivation for scientific research. You should have a background in (developmental) neuroscience, developmental psychology, experimental/cognitive psychology or a related field. Experience with behavioural experiments with young children and/or experience with neuroscientific methods (such as EEG, fNIRS) is a plus. A good command of spoken and written English is essential. Moreover, it is important that you speak Dutch or are willing to learn it.

Organization
The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties at Radboud University Nijmegen. The faculty’s ambition is to become one of the top social science institutes in Europe, providing high-quality research programmes and study programmes that rank among the best in the Netherlands.

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary team of developmental psychologists, neuroscientists, and cognitive psychologists at the DI and BRC. The institute boasts a unique combination of state-of-the-art experimental facilities, including an infant EEG lab.

Moreover, you will work in close contact with a second postdoctoral researcher, located at the NIN, who will examine how adults learn to act jointly in a novel cooperation task and which neural mechanisms are involved in establishing joint action. Together, the two subprojects will result in a neurocognitive model of joint action acquisition that will account for short- and long-term learning processes.
