These awards reflect the fact that the boundaries between international development policy and domestic policy increasingly parallel similar problems in developing countries so that both Canada and the less developed countries benefit from research on these issues. The complexities of national economic and social development in Canada are increasingly evident, and are often related to international issues. Similarly Canadian trade, investment, immigration and other policies often affect development in less developed countries. These awards will support research that illustrates these interrelationships. In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, the Centre Training and Awards Program is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia. Special Feature of this Award Successful candidates will propose comparative research requiring data from both Canada and a developing country to better understand the common, interrelated problem/issue, identified by the applicant. Selection will favor proposals that demonstrate:
Two Types of Canadian Window on International Development Awards 1) IDRC offers one award for doctoral research that explores the relationship between Canadian aid, trade, immigration, diplomatic policy, etc, and international development and the alleviation of global poverty. 2) A second award will be granted for doctoral or master’s research into a problem that is common to First Nations or Inuit communities in Canada and a developing region of the world. Eligibility Applicants must:
Duration Award tenure corresponds to a period of field research, which will be no less than 3 months and, in general, no more than 12 months. Candidates must propose a budget that covers the costs of fieldwork in Canada and/or other developing countries. Please note that living expenses incurred at the researcher's home base will not be supported. Number of Awards 2 to 3 per year, depending on the final budget of the proposals.D Deadlines April 1, 2010 (awards will be announced in September 2010). Applications Candidates must secure a short statement (no longer than 1 page, single-spaced, using a 12 pitch font) from their thesis supervisor which: 1) explains how he or she sees the proposed research conforming with the overall objective of this award to better understand an aspect of Canada’s development in the light of comparative research on social, economic, political, cultural etc. issues in a developing region of the world; 2) explains how the candidate’s proposal fits within the research interests of the department in which the student is registered.Applications will be evaluated according to criteria, such as relevance to sustainable and equitable development and to IDRC priorities, quality of the research proposal and suitability of the candidate. Re-applicants, whose research proposal was reviewed and was unsuccessful, must explain, in a covering letter, what changes have been made since the last application and specify where to find the changes in the proposal. Please note that Centre policy stipulates that an individual cannot apply more than twice, if unsuccessful, for the same IDRC award. However, this policy does not apply for Internship Awards. If there are ethical questions connected with the research, the applicant may, at IDRC’s discretion, be required to submit the appropriate approval for the Ethic’s Committee of the University. Please submit all documents listed in the List of Supporting Documents to be Submitted. Complete applications must be received at the Centre by the deadline. It highlights the fact that DFID recognises that the work of governments alone will not be enough to eliminate world poverty and that to achieve further and faster poverty reduction, governments must work closely with citizens and civil society groups. The White Paper states that over the next few years DFID will increase its work with organisations in the UK and overseas who play an important role in development. This will include groups with who do not currently benefit from DFID support. Many of these groups are involved in supporting very small scale, often localised activities which do not meet the criteria we have for our existing centrally managed civil society funding schemes, such as the Partnership Programme Arrangements (PPA) and Civil Society Challenge Fund (CSCF). To address this, DFID is establishing a new funding stream aimed at community based organisations involved in providing specific small scale, one-off support that directly targets poverty in the developing world and includes a significant development awareness component in the UK. The Fund will be operational for an initial 16 months from 2010. The Fund is intended to offer funding opportunities to not for profit organisations but is not intended to replace or overlap with other DFID funding mechanisms. Details of the Fund and application process Key elements

GENERAL INFORMATION: TechnoServe, Inc. (www.technoserve.org) is an international nonprofit development organization founded in 1968. Its mission is to help entrepreneurial men and women in poor rural areas of the developing world to build businesses that create jobs, income and economic opportunity for their families, their communities and their countries. Our work focuses on identifying promising business opportunities with a positive economic role for and impact on the rural poor, and facilitating the business linkages and partnerships needed to make deals occur. In addition to market linkages, we also provide credit linkages through loan guarantees and the sourcing of debt capital through commercial banks, and in improving managerial talent through transfer of skills to client firms. For several years now we are proud to partner with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) on projects in Africa – ranging from coffee and dairy sector initiatives in East Africa to cocoa and cashew interventions in West Africa. The BMGF has made agricultural development a strategic priority, with a grant portfolio of close to $800 million to date, focusing on increasing farm incomes as a way of reducing rural poverty. Multi-national corporations (MNCs) are key partners in such endeavours – they are already present in the target countries, making major purchases, and they are likely to be increasingly open to innovative smallholder sourcing given the global climate of increasing commodity and food prices. The BMGF intends to leverage win-wins for MNCs to invest in supply chain facilities and extension services as well as to provide purchase guarantees which will both meet their commercial needs and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. In the coming months, we will be engaged in the start-up of a new four-year pilot program that will demonstrate the ability of smallholder farmers in Kenya and Uganda to increase their incomes at least two-fold by becoming long-term sustainable suppliers of mango and passion fruit, both for sale on the fresh market and for processing. The program’s aim is to improve smallholder farmer incomes through productivity improvements, development of farmer-based organizations, and creation of market linkages. The program will initially focus on the domestic markets as an import substitution play, with a view to demonstrating future potential for exports. A major multinational corporation is confirmed as the main private sector partner in this project. Its participation will create a compelling pull factor and serve to lower risk for all participants along the chain. By the end of the pilot program, we will have proven the concept through the following achievements:
To enable evidence-based decision-making by program management and leadership that assures the achievement of the project goals. Working closely with the Kenya and Uganda Country Directors and the Fruit Program Manager, the Regional Fruit M&E Manager will be responsible for timely and effective implementation of the Monitoring & Evaluation systems and activities within the program, in accordance with the contractual obligations to BMGF.
