The online application form for the 2010 Dissertation Proposal Awards is now open. The application deadline is Friday, April 16th, 2010. The Center for Business Education at the Aspen Institute (Aspen CBE ) is pleased to announce the sponsorship of its 4th annual award for promising dissertation research. The purpose of this award is to identify innovative research in core business disciplines that considers the interdependence between business decision-making and a wider societal or environmental context. Dissertation Proposal Award winners are celebrated at an Aspen Institute function in New York City, receive recognition in both online and print brochures, are awarded a $1500 honorarium, and further benefits are given throughout the year. Encouraging and supporting business school faculty is central to the success of many of the Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education initiatives. In hopes of nurturing relationships with the next generation of faculty concerned with issues of environmental, ethical, and social importance, we introduced the Dissertation Proposal Award to encourage and recognize students showing interest in these issues while in their Ph.D. programs. In addition to the annual Dissertation Proposal Award, Aspen CBE, in partnership with the Foundation for Enterprise Development and the Employee Ownership Foundation, is sponsoring a special Dissertation Proposal Award category this year: the Shared Capitalism through Employee Ownership Award. Applicants must designate their intention to be considered for this Award on the Dissertation Proposal Award application form. All candidates for the Award must complete the online application form. The Integrated Research Partnerships for Malaria Control in Africa (IPMA) is a new initiative of IDRC’s Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health (Ecohealth) and Governance, Equity and Health (GEH) programs. In March 2010, IDRC will announce IPMA’s Call for Proposals:
IPMA will support integrated malaria research in endemic regions of Sub-Saharan Africa: that is research that creates synergies among environmental, health systems, and community-based approaches to malaria control. IPMA emphasizes systems thinking, collaboration across disciplines and regions, multi-stakeholder engagement, environmental sustainability, and social and gender equity. The Call for Proposals The Call for Proposals will catalyze the development of an Africa-wide stewardship network for integrated malaria research in endemic regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. It will address existing, formal or informal networks, each comprising up to three institutions in different countries located in the most affected malaria-endemic countries south of the Sahara.
1. Members of the network will add to and enhance evidence and impacts from integrated research for malaria control 2. Regional champions will build an Africa-wide network for integrated research for malaria control 3. The network will successfully develop a resource mobilization & advocacy strategy Criteria About Canada’s International Development Research Centre IDRC supports research in developing countries to promote growth and development. Make Water from Lake Victoria Safe to Drink! 02/17/2010
Reward: $20,000 USD Type: Theoretical-licensing INNOCENTIVE 9096676 Make Water from Lake Victoria Safe to Drink! Reward: $20,000 USD Type: Theoretical-licensing INNOCENTIVE 9096676 DEADLINE: March 11, 2010 This Challenge requires a design for an easy-to-use and robust method that purifies water from Lake Victoria so that it is safe to drink. This project is enabled by the Rockefeller Foundation. It is part of the Global Giveback Innovation Challenge Set. Challenge overview The waters of Lake Victoria contain bacteria, viruses, parasites, algae and other pollutants that cause enteric disease and death, especially amongst children under 5 years old. Existing methods of water purification are complex and often ineffective due to the need for sharing of centralized resources, electrical power networks, high cost, or complex maintenance routines. What is InnoCentive? InnoCentive is the global innovation marketplace where creative minds solve some of the world's most important problems for cash awards up to $1 million. Commercial, governmental and humanitarian organizations engage with InnoCentive to solve problems that can impact humankind in areas ranging from the environment to medical advancements. What is a Theoretical-licensing Challenge? An InnoCentive Theoretical Challenge implements an idea but is not yet a proof of concept. A solution to a Theoretical Challenge will solidify the Solver's concept with detailed descriptions, specifications and requirements necessary to bringing a good idea closer to becoming an actual product or service. This Challenge is a Theoretical-Licensing Challenge, meaning that the Seeker is requesting non-exclusive rights to use the winning solution. By contrast, Theoretical-IP Transfer means that Solvers must relinquish all rights to the Intellectual Property (IP) for which they are awarded. For both forms of a theoretical Challenge, solvers that do not win retain the rights to their solution after the evaluation period is complete. The Seeker retains no rights to any IP not awarded. The Lead Discovery Business line of TDR (LDR) aims to facilitate the discovery of new drug leads for infectious tropical diseases through North- South networks and partnerships between public and private sectors as well as academic institutions. Through the TDRs screening activities, several confirmed hits and lead compounds have become available for further SAR exploration and progression for several TDR target diseases including schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, filariasis, African sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, malaria and tuberculosis. We are now seeking partners with expertise in medicinal chemistry, and DMPK to take on the optimization of available molecules evaluated through the TDR screening network. We strongly encourage applications from developing countries as we hope that work on these molecules will contribute to development of innovation in developing countries and contribute to the implementation of emerging regional innovation networks exemplified by the African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation (ANDI) and ongoing discussions for Asian and South American Networks. Project description
Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria: experience and track record and experience of Principal Investigator (PI) and institution in synthetic or medicinal chemistry and DMPK, availability of basic infrastructure for synthetic/medicinal chemistry and DMPK, access to primary in vitro screens, and ability to guide post-doctoral chemists in the synthesis of analogues to explore SAR for optimization of anti-parasitic activity of compounds. Applicants are asked to develop a detailed implementation proposal covering technical and capacity building elements, budget and timelines. Deadline The deadline for proposals is March 31st 2010. Selected applicants will be contacted after the reviewing process. How to apply Please contact Ms Socorro Alias with any queries. The TDR Collaborative Research Grant form template should be used for all proposals. Download the form here On completion please submit electronically to aliass@who.int before the above deadline. Any additional documents may be submitted as appendices to this form (e.g. CVs of PI and research team, institutional letter of support). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
