Environmental PhD Researcher 17/11/2011
The Mobility and automotive technology research group (MOBI) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has an internationally recognised, 35-year long tradition of R&D on electric and hybrid vehicles, making it the prime electric vehicle research facility in Belgium. In its Faculty of Engineering, the VUB department of Electrical Engineering (ETEC), has an internationally recognised tradition of R&D on electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. MOBI is active in the field of innovative and environmentally friendly vehicle technologies, mainly concerning the characterising, testing and demonstration of electric, hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles and their components. Passenger transportation is responsible for large quantities of pollutants in the atmosphere. During the R&D of tomorrow's technological solutions of our current mobility problem, it is of utmost importance to take the environmental externalities into account in order to create a sustainable solution. MOBI has high-end expertise, on both national as Euroopean level, in assessing the environmental impacts throughout the full life cycle of a vehicle (starting from raw materials, production, usage toward end-of-life treatment). Environmental PhD Researcher Job description: You will be involved in the assessment of the environmental im mpact of new and sustainable solutions for the transportation and energy sector. The focus will be on the full life cycle of electric and hybrid electric passenger vehicles. Based on the experience and state-of-the-art of the MOBI team you will be developing software models to compute the environmental impacts. The candidate will be involved in applied research projects. MOBI has an extensive expertise in Life Cycle Assessments of vehicles and searches a candidate who is willing to bring new knowledge in the field of software development. You will actively participate in the European and Belgian research projects MOBI is involved in, including the attendance of project meetings and conferences. You are willing to carry out the research work in order to obtain a PhD degree in Engineering Sciences. Profile: Master of Science in Engineering, or Master of Science with specialisation in informatics or environment , electricity or electrochemistry. A thorough knowledge in a programming language and/or modelling and computation software (Matlab, Labview, JAVA or .NET) is considered as a distinct advantage. Expertise and experience in sustainable engineering and/or Life Cycle Assessment would be an asset. However, applicants with no previous track record in environmental assessments are also welcomed. They can benefit from the in-house expertise in LCA, guaranteeing a steep learning curve. You are an organized team player and are not scared to take initiative. You are fluent in written and spoken English and are willing to travel occasionally abroad. In addition the ideal cand didate should have basic knowledge of or affinity with:
Offer: MOBI offers the opportunity to obtain a PhD degree in a high-tech international environment and in a scientific domain which is currently at the the cutting edge of automotive developments. Opportunities for further education and training are given. Financial advantages include an attractive salary topped with fringe benefits such as free commuting by public transport and free hospitalisation insurance. MOBI is a multidisciplinary team in Brussels with over 40 motivated researchers. Applicants are invited to send a CV and a short cover letter, detailing their interest for the position and their relevant experiences. Please mention earliest start date. Phd position
Development of a multipurpose micromagnetic and micromechanical simulation platform A PhD position is available to join the research team that develops the multipurpose magnetic software platform “MuMax”. In a collaboration between the DyNaMat and EELAB groups at UGent, we are currently developing this high-performance simulation package that allows to simulate, on the one hand, the energy efficiency of electrical steels as used in electromagnetic devices, and, the read and write processes on e.g. hard disks on the other hand. In all applications, the complex magnetic processes can be determined by carefully combining Maxwell equations with micromechanic and micromagnetic equations. The software resulting algorithms will be implemented on the most modern and time efficient GPU hardware available (GPU: Graphical Processing Units). Due to its immense computational power compared to standard CPU computations, the software will open a complete range of new research opportunities to understand the rich physics of magnetic materials that can be exploited in various engineering applications. In practice this PhD work will focus in the first place on the development of numerical algorithms to solve large systems of coupled equations in magnetism. Depending on the candidates’ interest, the focus can be on the efficient GPU-implementation of the developed algorithms or on the engineering applications. Profile We are currently looking for a new PhD student with a masters degree in either electromechanical, electrical or physical engineering or a masters degree in physics. The research topic is the development of algorithms that efficiently solve complex coupled equations in a magnetic context. An interest in programming numerical code is required. This is a unique partnership where (RED) and Nike have created a dual approach focusing on two initiatives : education and medication. The concept is a simple one that invites people to “Lace Up. Save Lives” by purchasing a pair of Nike (RED) laces. Profits from the sale of the (RED) products will be split equally between the King Baudouin Foundation and the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Global Fund provides medicine for those affected by HIV/AIDS. The King Baudouin Foundation identifies and supports community based programmes in Africa that are using football to promote awareness around HIV/AIDS prevention. KBF was Nike's grant-giving partner for Nike's successful Stand Up Speak Up anti-racism campaign between 2005-2009. The goal of this call for proposals is to support football-based programs that deliver education on HIV/AIDS with the aim of preventing more young people from contracting the disease and reducing the stigma which surrounds it. Grants will be open to all African based initiatives. Special attention will be paid to applications that, either directly or indirectly, address girls as the most vulnerable segment of the population. We also value projects that are innovative, collaborative and focused. The first call for projects was launched on December 3rd 2009. The selection was announced in June. Twenty-six projects from sixteen countries are already being funded. Target group Support is intended for the following types of organizations : - Africa based - Nationally registered non-governmental organization, association, or club - Football program - HIV/AIDS program experience (education, prevention, stigma reduction) - Youth serving - Gender program experience Timing (dd/mm/yyyy) Launching the call: 12/07/2010 Deadline for submisson of application forms: 21/10/2010 Announcement of the selection by an independent jury: 11/02/2011 Selection criteria The following application criteria must be met to be considered for funding: • Application must be completed in English or French. • Application must be completed in the correct format (see below) and submitted to Nike-red@kbs-frb.be.
