THE ACCRA CONFERENCE 15th -18th AUGUST 2012: 

The Africa Media & Democracy Institute invites papers for its bi-annual Africa Media & Democracy Conference, to be held from 15th -18th August 2012, Accra – Ghana. The theme for the Conference is: “MEDIA & DEMOCRACY TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE STABILITY”.

BACKGROUND: Africa’s emerging democracies in the last two decades have had to co-exist with a vibrant media contestation. The media has relatively emerged as a formidable constituent as it vie for legitimacy in representing the broad masses. This contestation provides the framework for critical examination on how the media impacts on the democratic process. The Conference aims to address and examine various issues of media in the practise of democratic governance in Africa. The event is open to academics, media industry professionals, government agencies, policymakers, regulators, UN agencies, donors, civil society organisations, independent consultants and research groups and students.

Papers are also invited on the following sub-themes listed below;submissions could be made from a range of issues in relation to democracy & media practices in Africa. It must address specific media practices in the context of democracy in Africa, such as the role of radio commercials as political communication tool in electioneering, the corrosive effects of partisan media practices in popular democracy, the role of the media in the concept of popular democracy and Cinema, culture and democratic values etc.

AICI concept is to bring leading immunologists of the world with health personnel affected by these infectious diseases in order to create a platform that allows participants to appreciate the challenges and the opportunities that can accrue from apposing the human, research and perhaps financial capabilities of established, usually Northern and western centres with the heavily disease burdened centres in the south.

Bangkok has been selected by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) as the venue for the 15th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (15th ICID) in June 2012.

ISID exists to encourage collaboration between leaders as well as students to find new solutions to the world's infectious diseases. ISID promotes this by bringing together clinicians, researchers, microbiologists and epidemiologists of infectious diseases from all countries of the world to share their commitment and expertise. The end result will be new partnerships, new preventive methods and new therapeutics.

ISID's most successful collaborative program is ProMED-mail, the global electronic surveillance and communication network reporting potential outbreaks affecting humans, animals and plants around the world. ProMED-mail communicates immediate information about disease outbreaks to >50,000 subscribers. Outbreak reports are created by a staff of 40 international experts, in multiple languages, on a daily basis, for free.

The 15th ICID will be a chance for ongoing collaborative efforts, as well as for individuals, to present and share their experiences fighting infectious diseases. To commemorate the 30th year of our Society we are keen to provide attendees in Bangkok with an outstanding scientific program that will run the spectrum from cutting edge research with clinical implications, to state of the art practices in infectious diseases by a truly international faculty composed of world leaders in their areas. ISID looks forward to working together with our collaborator in Thailand, the Infectious Disease Association of Thailand (IDAT), as well as other organizations to develop 15th ICID.

Thailand is bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia and Cambodia, countries where many infectious diseases are endemic, and the choice of Bangkok reflects the commitment of ISID to host meetings in areas where healthcare, education and training in infectious diseases are important issues.

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has the ideal congress infrastructure and is an optimal hub site to welcome Asian and worldwide participants to our scientific meeting. Attendees will be able to visit historical sites, immerse in art and culture, taste special foods as well as travel to exotic and beautiful areas outside of the city.

The ACADEMIC PROGRAMME will include plenary-type presentations from internationally recognised speakers. It is intended that the programme should cover the widest possible spectrum of virology in Africa. Topics will include (but will not be limited to) HIV/AIDS, vaccinology, emerging and special pathogens, veterinary virology, viral immunology, viral epidemiology, viruses and cancer, plant and insect and fungal viruses, and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis. A specialist workshop on human papillomavirus is being planned. The venue will allow for parallel workshops of oral presentations and poster sessions. The preliminary programme will be posted on the webpage well in advance of the conference.

Senior students are encouraged to present their research. A limited number of bursaries will be available for students presenting at the conference. Application forms will be available on the webpage.

We would like to bring a major conference on civil-military relations to your kind attention. The Research Committee on Armed Forces and Society (RC 24) of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) will hold its triennial international and interdisciplinary conference at Bilkent Hotel in Ankara, Turkey, 17-19 June 2011. The conference is organized in cooperation with Bilkent University.

Students of civil-military relations in Turkey are particularly encouraged to submit proposals. There will be at least 3 to 4 panels on civil-military relations in Turkey. Subject to availability, financial assistance may be awarded to presenters coming from Turkey.

Call for Papers:
THEME: ARMED FORCES AND SOCIETY: NEW DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGES

The empowerment of new social forces, including ethnic and religious groups, as democratization proceeds through fits and starts, as well as the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack on U.S. soil and the response of the U.S. government to it, have generated substantial challenges to national security and civil-military relations.

Civilian and military authorities virtually everywhere are seeking to define their relationship in the new setting, and along the way overt or covert military intervention has re-appeared in some countries. In countries where the military has traditionally had the upper hand, the armed forces might have started to use the new challenges to justify their domination of politics. Consequently, domestic terrorists continue to develop international links, national security is being privatized, and numerous countries are discovering that well-armed armies and police forces cannot provide citizen security.

In some cases, conflict may develop between the police forces representing the civilian government and the military holding on to power in the political system. In other words, civil-military relations take on different forms in different constellation of countries, which obliges governments to deal with challenges in differing ways. The Research Committee on Armed Forces and Society of the International Political Science Association, in conjunction with Bilkent University, invite scholars, policymakers, military analysts, practitioners and all concerned to a three-day conference where these and related issues will receive scholarly attention and scrutiny.

The Organizing Committee encourages the submission of complete panel proposals (Chair, Discussant and three-four paper presentations) , but also welcomes individual submissions for chairing, discussing or presenting a paper.
