The ISCB Student Council is pleased to announce a internship at Burkhard Rost lab at Technische Universitaet Muenchen (Technical University of Munich - TUM). This internship is exclusively arranged by the Student Council in collaboration with Prof Dr Burkhard Rost for a undergraduate (Bachelors) or graduate (Masters or PhD) student from a developing nation.

About Rost lab @TUM, Munich

The principal aim of the lab is to predict important aspects of protein structure and function using sequence information, evolutionary information. Their research utilizes modern machine learning techniques such as neural networks, SVMs, tree-algorithms and Bayesian classifiers for in-silico predictions. You can find more information at the lab website. This position will be located at the Technische Universität München, Munich campus. You can find an overview of their activities here. In short, the group is primarily involved in:
  • Prediction of coarse-grained aspects of protein function
  • Prediction of interaction partners, subcellular localization and of functional effects of point mutations/SNPs
  • Prediction of disordered regions, membrane spanning segments and aspects of protein secondary structure
  • Identification of domain-like functional and structural subunits in proteins
  • Clustering of proteins into families
This internship will be funded at $1000 to $1500 per month depending on experience. The duration of the internship will initially be 3 months and it can be extended to 6 months. After receiving the award notification, the student needs to apply for the visa on his/her own at the local German Consulate. The lab will supply a invitation and support letter for visa application. Organiser The Master's Programme "Medical Biometry/Biostatistics" is assigned to the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. The programme is designed, realized and supported by the Institute of Medical Biometry and Informatics (IMBI) (» Contact).

The Importance of Medical Biometry A successful planning and realisation of medical projects is only possible if the responsible biometrician disposes over a broad knowledge of methodical, medical and interdisciplinary skills. Thereby, the ability to integrate medical and statistical research areas is of great importance.

Worldwide, there exists a high demand on scientifically educated biometricians that cannot be covered. This holds true particularly for Germany, as German universities do not  provide a respective fundamental education. Many other countries from the European Union are strugglicng with the same problem. However, most of them have already established educational programmes to overcome this problem.

Currently, the University of Heidelberg is implementing the Bologna Process in order to obtain an international educational system. In this context, the Postgradual Education in Medical Biometry, which had been the only educational programme in Medical Biometry at a German university so far, was reconstructed to realize an extra-occupational Master’s Programme. With its new structure and modular design,  the curriculum meets international standards. The corresponding study degree “Master of Science for Medical Biometry/Biostatistics” is accepted all over Europe. Therefore, the new Master’s Programme can successfully compete with other universities on the European market.

The Master’s Programme covers the theoretical part of the GMDS-certificate “Biometry in Medicine” (German Society of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology), which is accepted by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfARM) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) as proof of a biostatistical qualification for biometrical support in the admission of Phase I-III studies.

Note A full-time Master’s programme “Medical Biometry/Biostatistics” is provided by the University of Bremen. Please contact Dr. Breunig, Tel.: +49 421 / 218-9138, bessie@math.uni-bremen.de. (>> Website)

MScIH - Overview

Overall Aim
The focus of our International Health Programme is on poverty-related health problems in low and middle income countries.

In order to make health services accessible to the people who need them most, there is a need in many developing countries to improve health policy, to make organisation, planning and management more efficient at all levels of the delivery system, and to ensure sustainable financing.

The Master of Science Course in International Health (MSc IH) at Heidelberg University was developed with these factors in mind.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide students with a solid foundation in international public health principles and with competency in using the tools and methods necessary to initiate and run programmes that improve the health of poor populations in an efficient, sustainable and equitable way.

The Structure The MScIH is a modular programme consisting of three parts, each accounting for 20 ECTS (= European Credit Transfer System):
  • Core Course - providing a basic overview on essential topics in international health
  • Advanced Modules - offering more in-depth learning on selected topics
  • Thesis - allowing for individual research guided by a tutor
Full Time and Part Time Study
Full Time
The MScIH programme can be completed in a one-year Residential Track (full time), with a fixed set of Advanced Modules (RT) taken at Heidelberg.

Part Time
It can also be taken in form of the European Track (tropEd: Network for Higher Education in International Health), allowing for part time studies and an individual choice of Advanced Modules (ET) offered within the tropEd network. The Master needs to be completed within 5 years.

Before entering the programme, the candidate must decide which track to follow.

Teaching and Learning Methods The lecturers and course staff are commited to the development of a learning atmosphere that balances input lectures, participatory activities and independent, individual studies. For this, a combination of approaches is used:
  • Interactive lectures - to present theoretical and conceptual issues
  • Group work, group discussions, plenary session - to enable the participants to share thoughts and ideas and thereby deepen their understanding of theories and concepts
  • Workshops and seminars - to facilitate the learning of skills
  • Tutorials - to ensure the achievement of individual learning goals and to meet individual learning needs.
Start Date
The MScIH programme starts each year October 1st

Student Assessment Procedures
Assessment of the participants' achievement of the learning objectives take place throughout the course.

In general, students are not asked for mere repetition of facts, but to synthesise knowledge obtained within a given module.

Assessment includes written in-class exams with essay style and short-answer questions, as well as group projects and individual take-home assignments.

Certification
After all three parts have been completed sucessfully, students reeive the Heidelberg MScIH degree.

European Track students, who have followed all tropEd rules, are awarded in addition a tropEd certificate.
