The goal of the project is to provide proof of principle for the efficacy of mass distribution of odour-baited traps and other innovative vector control tools in the elimination of malaria from the island. Traps will be operated by electric power generated by solar energy. It is the specific purpose to introduce the intervention tool with participation of the local community. This multi-disciplinary study will be a collaboration between entomologists, medical doctors, parasitologists, epidemiologists, sociologists and economists. The PhD student will study the epidemiology of malaria among the communities living on Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria and assess the impact of the intervention tools on malaria in its broadest sense. In particular the project aims to assess changes in parasite transmission in communities and how this affects disease incidence in time and space. We ask We ask someone who is interested in an interdisciplinary approach. The successful candidate will have a MSc degree in epidemiology of infectious diseases and/or biology (specialization: epidemiology). Previous experience in the field of vector control and/or disease control is an advantage. Knowledge of geographic information systems and its integration in epidemiological tools is considered essential. The candidate will be proficient in the English language and be prepared to travel to and work at the project field station in western Kenya. We expect a candidate who can work in a multidisciplinary team in a collaborative spirit. Within the Laboratory of Entomology PhD students are encouraged to supervise MSc thesis students when such opportunities arise. We offer We offer a full-time position (38 hours), initially for 1 year after which a go/no go decision will be taken on extension with another three years. Such solutions are created when diverse stakeholders are able to meet, share experiences, learn together and contribute to decisions. Ultimate success then lies in developing the collective commitment and capacity to turn ideas and plans into action. This can be achieved through multi-stakeholder processes (MSPs) and social learning. The course covers state-of-the-art thinking about participation from local to global level and introduces the most up-to-date methodologies and approaches for facilitation and participation. How MSPs and social learning relate to concepts such as innovation systems, complexity, interactive policy making and adaptive management is fully explored. Application Interested candidates can apply to Wageningen UR Centre for Development Innovation for admission to the training. Click here to apply. NFP Fellowships A limited number of fellowships is available from Nuffic - the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) for nationals of certain countries. In order to apply for such a NFP fellowship, you have to register through the Nuffic Scholarship Online (SOL) system. Applications for NFP fellowships should be submitted before 1 February 2012. You will be informed by Nuffic whether your application has been accepted. More information on the NFP fellowships. Important Please note that for a valid NPF fellowship application you need to register directly at CDI as well as at Nuffic (SOL). Your fellowship application will not be taken into account if you register with only one of these two institutions. 3-week international course on ‘Facilitating Multi Stakeholder Processes and Social Learning’ (3 - 21 September 2012) - NUFFIC NFP Fellowship deadline 1 february 2012 a. Research question Will water and health care officials/providers in Tanzania accept ‘human sensor web’ (HSW) or other open source information systems as part of their information and accountability structures? b. Tasks The research design is based on triangulation and comparative strategies between surveys and in-depth case studies. Based on the survey outcomes, interesting cases will be selected for in-depth investigation through ethnographic work (observation, text analysis, and unstructured interviews). Especially accountability structures and individual discretion can be mapped through systematically asking who talks to whom about what. Theory-informed triangulation between surveys and case studies, and careful between-case comparisons will deliver the answers to the research questions. c. Requirements

Research question How can Tanzanian citizens behave in relation to the human sensor web (HSW) and become legitimate reporters of the quality of water and health services? b. Tasks The researcher will conduct literature review on common pool resources in online settings as well as focus groups of users of text-for-change initiatives in Eastern Africa. The researcher will ‘follow the problem’ by tracing the use of HSW and how people distribute their trust over time and scale. Data will be collected through survey first, then participant observation and documents, and analyzed through socio-political mapping of the resources and beliefs and behaviour of users. Comparative sub-case studies will be identified to refine the prescriptive part of the study. c. Requirements

Research question Under which conditions can the context of a human sensor be used in a (web) software environment to enhance the understanding and reliability of human sensor information and how does context play a role in scalable human sensor networks? b. Tasks The PhD student will design a method to express human sensor context in a formal language, which will be tested with use cases based on non-fictive human sensors in water and health. Formalised parameters and methods of geo-visual analytics shall be implemented in an open source software prototype following common design principles for software design. The PhD student will work closely together with the software developer to create and test the SEMA prototype software with the stakeholders in three iterations of ‘learn and deploy’. c. Requirements
