KTH The School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) seeks a PhD student in Computer Science

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.

CSC is one of Sweden’s most advanced and successful research and education institutions in Information Technology at KTH and Stockholm University. The activities of the school focus on higher education and research within the traditional core areas of numerical analysis and computer science; from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algorithm construction, implementation and simulation. Other core areas of growing importance are technology and methods for the support of human communication and computer mediated cooperation over distances in time and space. The applied research includes scientific computing, computer science, computer vision, robotics, neuroinformatics and neural networks, human-computer interaction, media technology and graphic arts, and communication through speech, language and music. For more information see www.kth.se/csc

The Department for Parallel and Distributed Computing (PDC) performs applied research in parallel and distributed computing methodologies and tools, with a particular focus on programming support (methods and tools), resource management, performance tools, distributed data handling, and wide area distributed computing and networking.

Research Project
The goal of this project is to study data security aspects in wide area (cloud) computing. When dealing with data over distributed systems confining possible access and storage of data to a certain (geographic) domain is an important feature to ensure protection of potentially sensitive data. Examples include medical data that may not be stored outside the realm of the hospital. Data protection on shared systems (such as cloud systems) is another important topic of this work. The project will cover both theoretical aspects of data protection and privacy as well as practical implementations of prototype systems.

The candidate will join a collaborative project between PDC and the Theoretical Computer Science group of CSC.

This is a four-year, time-limited position and normally includes 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. Research/doctoral students must be registered at KTH. The salary follows the guidelines provided by KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Qualifications A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Computer Science with a specialisation in security, distributed systems, or equivalent. In addition to the traditional academic merits experiences with distributed systems, international experience and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

Our MBA programme gives you the opportunity to add managerial competence to your previous academic background. After graduating, you will be ready to take on new challenges in your professional career. We offer two versions of the programme:

1. MBA programme, full time, starting in September and ending in June the following year.
2. MBA programme, part time, starting in September and ending in June two years later.

The programme is conducted as an online programme, meaning that you can take part in the programme wherever you are in the world. Only one written comprehensive exam requires your presence on campus.

Applications for the programme starting in September 2010 will be open at two separate occasions:
  • The first opens on December 1st and closes on January 15th. International students apply in this early session, since all information here will be in English.
  • The second, which will be available only in the Swedish language, is open between March 15th and April 15th. You apply at https://www.studera.nu/ which is a joint application system for all Swedish universities.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) in Sweden offer a wide range of courses and study programmes where the language of instruction is English.

Applying online
When applying to study in Sweden, you may choose to apply for self-contained courses or full study programmes. You can search and apply for courses and study programmes at first cycle (undergraduate) and second cycle (Master's) on this website. For third cycle studies (doctoral), click on the tab 'Third cycle' at the top of this page.

One application
In Sweden, there is a pooled admissions system so you can apply for several courses and study programmes at different universities by submitting one application.

Nationals of the EEA and Switzerland
Nationals of Members States of the EEA (EEA: Member States of the EU and Norway, Iceland and, Liechtenstein) and Switzerland do not require visas to study in Sweden.

Nationals of non-EEA countries
Nationals of non-EEA countries must apply for visas to study in Sweden. It can take a long time for a visa to be granted and, therefore, non-EEA nationals should apply for courses or study programmes with an application deadline of 15 January for entry the following autumn semester and 1 August for entry the following spring semester.
