Visiting Fellows are expected to be resident in Oxford during the tenure of the Fellowship. A Visiting Fellow may be elected for a period of one, two, or three terms within the Oxford academic year. The dates of ‘Full Term’ at Oxford for 2012–2013 are: Michaelmas Term from Sunday, 7 October to Saturday, 1 December, 2012 Hilary Term from Sunday, 13 January to Saturday, 9 March, 2013 Trinity Term from Sunday, 21 April to Saturday, 15 June, 2013 Eligibility Most Visiting Fellows are holders of university posts, but the College welcomes applications from others who wish to carry out scholarly work in Oxford, including work that engages with public life considered broadly to include (for example) the law, public policy, and the arts. Visiting Fellowships are not normally offered to candidates who before the end of their tenure of the fellowship would have reached the usual retirement age for academic fellows of the College, which is currently 67. There is no limitation upon the field of study. It is not the College’s policy to offer Visiting Fellowships to persons holding posts in Oxford or who are already resident in or near Oxford. Rights of Visiting Fellows Visiting Fellows enjoy most of the rights of ordinary Fellows (including lunches and dinners without charge), but are not members of the governing body of the College. The College normally provides without charge a study in College and fully-furnished residential accommodation in Oxford. Studies and residential accommodation are normally available to Visiting Fellows between 15 September and 30 June, including vacations. Studies are not normally available outside these dates, but applications to rent summer accommodation for a period contiguous with a term may be considered; it is necessary to apply early. Some flats are available for families, and these may be available for rental from before 15 September for those Fellows accompanied by children who need to be present for the start of the school year. There is no stipend attached to Visiting Fellowships. In exceptional circumstances, the College may offer limited financial help. Any candidates desiring to take advantage of this provision should indicate this at the time of application in the ‘Financial Subvention’ section of the online form. Selection Procedure The College has to choose every year from among a large number of well-qualified applicants, in widely varied fields of study. In making this choice, we give weight to intellectual quality, to the interest and feasibility of the research project, and to the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford. We therefore ask applicants to include with their application form a full statement, of not more than 1,000 words, of the scholarly project they would pursue during their tenure of a Visiting Fellowship, and of the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford. All Souls College Oxford OX1 4AL tel. +44 (0)1865 279379 Applications must be submitted by 2 September 2011. The online application system will remind referees to submit references, but the College relies upon applicants to ensure that references are submitted by 9 September 2011 at the latest, and cannot itself undertake to approach referees. Candidates may expect to hear the outcome of their application before the end of November.
