 The Program Sokoine University, Seattle BioMed and NIMR will convene a special workshop focusing on Immunology of Parasitic Diseases.  An international faculty will lead a two-week workshop to train graduate students and young scientists from Africa in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including malaria parasites and trypanosomes.

Areas to be covered include:

• Vaccines
• Parasite Biology
• Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics
• Host Immunity
• Research Ethics
• Biostatistics and Epidemiology
• Molecular Biology
• Developing Research Proposals

The workshop will emphasize student participation through symposia, poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions and informal interactions. The workshop organizers hope to generate interest in parasitic diseases research, to promote networks of East African and international scientists and students, and to identify graduate students and young scientists who may be interested in graduate or postdoctoral training at research facilities in East Africa or overseas.

Especially outstanding students selected to participate will receive support for their travel, room and board. Applications should be received no later than 31 March 2010. Applicants should include an abstract (1 page only) describing research that the student has performed or would like to perform in the future on some aspect of protozoan pathogens.
