The ISCB Student Council is pleased to announce a internship at Burkhard Rost lab at Technische Universitaet Muenchen (Technical University of Munich - TUM). This internship is exclusively arranged by the Student Council in collaboration with Prof Dr Burkhard Rost for a undergraduate (Bachelors) or graduate (Masters or PhD) student from a developing nation. 

About Rost lab @TUM, Munich

The principal aim of the lab is to predict important aspects of protein structure and function using sequence information, evolutionary information. Their research utilizes modern machine learning techniques such as neural networks, SVMs, tree-algorithms and Bayesian classifiers for in-silico predictions. You can find more information at the lab website. This position will be located at the Technische Universität München, Munich campus. You can find an overview of their activities here. In short, the group is primarily involved in:

• Prediction of coarse-grained aspects of protein function
• Prediction of interaction partners, subcellular localization and of functional effects of point mutations/SNPs
• Prediction of disordered regions, membrane spanning segments and aspects of protein secondary structure
• Identification of domain-like functional and structural subunits in proteins
• Clustering of proteins into families

This internship will be funded at $1000 to $1500 per month depending on experience. The duration of the internship will initially be 3 months and it can be extended to 6 months. After receiving the award notification, the student needs to apply for the visa on his/her own at the local German Consulate. The lab will supply a invitation and support letter for visa application. The travel costs to/from Munich and accommodation during the internship will NOT be covered by the host lab and shall be borne by the student in full.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student should be a citizen of a developing country and pursuing a degree program in a university located in a developing country. If you are not sure of your countries classification, please check the IMF website here.
• Currently enrolled as a full time student.
• Recommendation letter from Supervisor. The letter on the official University letterhead, should clearly state that the student is enrolled as a full time student in the University and will continue to maintain the same status during the period of internship.
• Statement of Purpose (max 500 words). It is expected that the student briefly talks about his/her past experience in computational biology showcasing the skills he/she has learned.

Prerequisite skills:
- Background in biology
- Programming experience
