The Wellcome Trust’s PhD Programmes for Clinicians are a flagship scheme aimed at supporting the most promising clinicians who wish to undertake a rigorous research training.

Successful applicants will develop their potential to become academic clinicians within a structured and mentored training environment. The focus of the LSHTM programme is on research training relevant to international health priorities, and research projects will be carried out in low or middle-income countries.

Applicants must be fully-qualified medical doctors, have a relevant connection to the European Economic Area (EEA) and will normally be expected to have already started their specialist training. They must show a commitment to pursuing a career as an academic clinician with an interest in international health.

Support includes a clinical salary for three years as a member of LSHTM staff, PhD fees, research expenses, general training funds and travel costs.

Candidates should be:
  • Fully qualified as a medical doctor
  • Relevant connection to the EEA
  • Training in a Specialty relevant to health in the developing world
  • Keen to pursue research in International health in a low or middle income country
  • Committed to an academic career in a speciality relevant to international health
European Economic Area (EEA)

In order to establish a relevant connection to the European Economic Area (EEA) you must be either:
  • a UK/EEA national
  • a non-EEA national who either has a relevant degree from a university in the UK or Republic of Ireland (ROI), or has worked in a UK or ROI university, hospital or institution for at least a continuous three year period
The programmeThree year PhD for clinicians, candidates will be remunerated on a clinical salary equivalent to the basic UK SpR training grade salary starting in September.

Range of disciplines and supervisors available for clinical research across all three faculties of LSHTM, Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health, Faculty of Public Health and Policy.

Short listed candidates will be advised of potential supervisors available for the programme, clinical specialties are: primary care, mental health, maternal health, public health, paediatrics, infectious diseases, tropical medicine, genito-urinary medicine and ophthalmology; and the following academic disciplines: microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, parasitology, epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical trials, nutrition, social science, health economics, health services research and health policy.

It is expected that the candidates will spend up to two years overseas in a low or middle income country based in well-established research groups.

Our broad clinical training and taught course programmes attract many able young doctors with an interest in the medical problems of developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America.

Short listed candidates will be referred to potential supervisors for discussions on possible research projects, and will work with a supervisor to develop a pre-proposal.

Short listed candidates will prepare a proposal on their research project for submission to the interview committee.

Interviews will be held in April 2012 at which short listed candidates will be expected to give a 10 minute presentation on their research proposal.

Three candidates will be selected for the programme.
