Job description
We are looking for
We are looking for a PhD Malaria Epidemiology and Entomology
The Laboratory of Entomology in collaboration with the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, Kenya, will conduct a study to eliminate malaria from Rusinga Island in Lake Victoria, Kenya.
The goal of the project is to provide proof of principle for the efficacy of mass distribution of odour-baited traps and other innovative vector control tools in the elimination of malaria from the island.
Traps will be operated by electric power generated by solar energy. It is the specific purpose to introduce the intervention tool with participation of the local community.
This multi-disciplinary study will be a collaboration between entomologists, medical doctors, parasitologists, epidemiologists, sociologists and economists.
The PhD student will study the epidemiology of malaria among the communities living on Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria and assess the impact of the intervention tools on malaria in its broadest sense.
In particular the project aims to assess changes in parasite transmission in communities and how this affects disease incidence in time and space.
We ask
We ask someone who is interested in an interdisciplinary approach.
The successful candidate will have a MSc degree in epidemiology of infectious diseases and/or biology (specialization: epidemiology). Previous experience in the field of vector control and/or disease control is an advantage. Knowledge of geographic information systems and its integration in epidemiological tools is considered essential. The candidate will be proficient in the English language and be prepared to travel to and work at the project field station in western Kenya. We expect a candidate who can work in a multidisciplinary team in a collaborative spirit. Within the Laboratory of Entomology PhD students are encouraged to supervise MSc thesis students when such opportunities arise.
