New British High Commissioner Designate arrives in Dar es Salaam

Ms. Sarah Cooke succeeds Ms. Dianna Melrose and will be the third successive female British High Commissioner to Tanzania.
Ms. Cooke joined the British Civil Service in 2002. She has worked in a number of UK Government departments including the Department for International Development (DFID), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit in the Cabinet Office.

She also served as the Deputy Head of the Commission for Africa Secretariat. Most recently, she was the DFID Country Representative in Bangladesh. Prior to joining the British Civil Service, she worked as an economist in London, Guyana and the Solomon Islands.

On her appointment, Ms Cooke said:
I am delighted and deeply honoured to be taking up my new position as British High Commissioner in Dar es Salaam. The United Kingdom and Tanzania enjoy a strong, longstanding partnership and work closely together on our many shared interests, including trade, investment, development and security. I am committed to strengthening our partnership still closer and look forward to getting to know Tanzania and its people.

Bibi Sarah Cooke, Balozi mpya (Mteule) wa Uingereza nchini Tanzania awasili jana 25 Agosti, 2016 Dar es Salaam.

Bi.Cooke amechukua nafasi iliyoachwa wazi na Bi.Dianna Melrose (ambaye amestaafu) na ni mwanamke wa tatu kushika nyadhifa ya ubalozi kuiwakilisha Uingereza nchini Tanzania.

Bi Cooke alijiunga na Utumishi Uingereza mnamo mwaka 2002. Alifanya kazi kadha wa kadha katika idara za Serikali ya Uingereza ikiwemo Shirika la Kimataifa la Maendeleo la Uingereza (DFID), Wizara ya Mambo ya Nje na Kitengo cha Mikakati cha Waziri Mkuu katika Ofisi ya Baraza la Mawaziri. Pia alipata kuhudumu kama Makamu Mkuu wa Tume ya Sekretariati ya Africa. Hivi karibuni, alikuwa ndiye Mkuu wa Shirika la Kimataifa la Maendeleo (DFID) nchini Bangladesh. Kabla ya kujiunga Utumishi katika Serikali ya Uingereza, alipata kufanya kazi kama Mchumi jijini London, Guyana na visiwa vya Solomoni.

Juu ya uteuzi wake, Bi.Cooke alisema;
“Nimefurahi na ni heshima kubwa kwangu kupewa jukumu hili jipya kama Balozi wa Uingereza nchini Tanzania. Uingereza na Tanzania inafurahia mahusiano na ushirikiano wa muda mrefu na kufanya kazi kwa karibu katika maeneo mengi ambayo tunashabihiana katika vipaumbele ikiwemo biashara, uwekezaji, maendeleo na usalama. Nina dhamiria kuimarisha ushirikiano huu bora zaidi na nina taraji kuijua vyema Tanzania na watu wake”

Mabalozi wa Uingereza Wanawake waliopata kuhudumu Tanzania ni pamoja na; Dianna Melrose (2013-2016) na Diane Corner (2009-2012)
  • Tume ya Afrika ilianzishwa mapema 2004 kama mshauri wa Serikali ya Uingereza juu ya Masuala yahusuyo G8 ambapo Uingereza ilikuwa Rais wa kundi hilo (G8) mwaka 2005. Tume ilikuwa na wajumbe 17 akiwemo Rais Mstaafu Benjamin Mkapa. Ripoti ya Tume hiyo, “Vipaumbele vyetu vinavyoshabihiana” ilipendekeza hatua ambazo zitumike kujenga na kustawisha Afrika. Mengi ya mapendekezo hayo yalichukuliwa na kundi la G8 mnamo mwaka 2005 na katika maazimio mengine makubwa ya Afrika na Kimataifa.
