Here are 10 things that were learnt from the study, which surveyed 25,000 people in 19 countries. 1. 75% of South Africans think polygamy is "morally wrong" - bad news for their president, as Jacob Zuma took his third wife earlier this year and is engaged to a fourth. However, the survey also revealed some possible double-standards. While only 7% of Rwandans approved of polygamy (although this did include women), a rather higher number - 17% - of men said they had more than one wife. 2. An overwhelming majority of respondents disapproved of homosexual behaviour. In three countries - Zambia, Kenya and Cameroon - this was a massive 98%. Interestingly, one of the countries with the highest numbers of people - 11% - accepting homosexuals is Uganda, where an MP is trying to get legislation passed which would punish homosexual acts with life in prison and even death in some cases. The former Portuguese colonies of Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique were also relatively tolerant of homosexuality. 3. Africa is probably the world's most religious continent, with more than 80% saying they believed in God in most countries. At least half of the Christians questioned expect Jesus Christ to return to earth during their lifetimes. In Ethiopia, 74% of Christians say they have experienced or witnessed the devil or evil spirits being driven out of a person and in Ghana, 40% of Christians say they have had a direct revelation from God. About half of all Muslims expect to see the reunification of the Islamic world under a single ruler, or caliph, in their lifetimes. 4. Zimbabwe, where the Lemba people say they are the lost tribe of Israel, was not one of the countries surveyed. But 26% of Nigerian Christians said they traced their origins back to Israel or Palestine. 5. Belief in witchcraft is also common - about 40%; a similar percentage also visit traditional healers to cure sickness. Belief in witchcraft is highest in Tanzania with 93% - this is the country where witchdoctors say that magic potions are more effective if they contain body parts of people with albinism. Ethiopia had the lowest levels of belief in witchcraft - at just 17%. Belief that juju or sacred objects can prevent bad things happening was generally lower - between 20 and 30%. In Senegal, however, 75% thought such things worked - far higher than in Tanzania (49%). It may come as a surprise to learn that South Africa had the highest number of people - 52% - saying they took part in ceremonies of traditional religions, or honoured or celebrated their ancestors. 6. Predictably, there was also a religious split concerning alcohol, banned by Islam. Surprisingly, however, more Muslims in Chad (23%) approved of booze, than Ethiopian Christians (5%). 7. Attitudes to divorce showed a strong divide along religious lines in Nigeria. A massive 79% of Christians thought it was "morally wrong", while among Muslims, a narrow majority (46-41%) accepted divorce. 8. In recent years, Islamist hardliners in Somalia and Nigeria have introduced strict punishment based on Sharia law, such as amputating the hands of thieves and even stoning to death for adultery. The majority of people disapproved of such Sharia punishments. In Nigeria, they were backed by about 40% of Muslims and less than 10% of Christians. However, a majority did approve of whippings and amputations in Senegal and Mali. In nearby Guinea-Bissau, even 50% of Christians backed them. This was double the rate among Muslims in Ethiopia (25%) - maybe it feels like a more realistic prospect to them, as they share a border with Somalia and most Muslim Ethiopians are ethnic Somalis. 9. The survey also asked about material well-being in the world's poorest continent. Not so long ago, Cameroon regularly topped surveys of champagne consumption per head. However, a shocking 71% of Cameroonians surveyed said there were times in the past year when they did not have enough money to buy food. In Ethiopia, which is commonly seen as a country struggling to feed itself, the rate was far lower - at 30% - the lowest of all countries surveyed. 10. Ethiopia did, however, have the lowest numbers of people - 7% - who said they regularly used the internet. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame is striving to turn his country into Africa's answer to Silicon Valley and is being helped by the arrival of several new fibre optic cables off the east coast of Africa. He will be encouraged by the finding that 30% of his countrymen - the highest number - regularly browsed the web. Mobile phones, were far more common - with 81% of respondents in Botswana owning one. Many countries reported more than 50% having phones but here, Rwanda lagged behind at just 35%. Mine collapse in Geita (N.East) Tanzania - 16 killed, others injured Ten artisanal miners died and eight others were seriously injured after being buried alive by a collapsing mine at Kasame in Geita district, Mwanza region, police said yesterday. Acting Mwanza regional police commander, Nonosius Komba, said the mine collapsed at around 2:00pm on Monday. He named the injured artisanal miners as Mabula Mbashi, 32, whose legs were broken, Festo Alexanda, 43, a resident of Kibe in the district, who was injured on the head and Gendo Kaikanye, 40, who was injured on the chest. Others were Masumbuko Faustine, 32, who was injured on the chest, Mapato Manywele, 33, who was injured on the head and chest, Laurent Lutobela, 24, who sustained injuries on the chest and the hip, Bhahati Swamwel, 28, who was injured on the hip, Masumbuko Magabe, 26, who was also injured on the chest and hip and Simon Mussa, 28, who was injured on hip, waist and the back. Some of the injured artisanal miners, who were admitted at Geita district hospital were in critical condition and that bodies of their deceased colleagues were recovered and buried by relatives, he said. The bodies were hastily buried for fear of state organs prohibiting mining activities to continue at the area, Komba said, adding that, investigation regarding the incident was in progress. Previously our grand grand parent's were taken abroad, we might say because of man power because they were strong, but who thought it will be like today. Lets go straight to our discussion of today ''the issue of doctors moving for green pastures" i mean the General practitioners and specialists who are living their dreams. I say that because studying medicine is a passion that you must endure; it consumes energy, more over it requires commitment and dedication that implies from day one of med school to working environment. There are alot of frustrations on the way as a med student to the working environment, just because some did it in a hard way so most want others to experience the same i will not comment much on this because it is not today's discussion. ![]() Currently I would like to congratulate the government for its great efforts to emphasize people and more specifically pupils and teachers to study science subjects, I have seen number of schools increased from Primary to Secondary, number of Universities and University intake increasing, furthermore I have seen the government sponsoring student's courses of undergraduate in medicine and engineering even in private Unversities, bravo for that, it is a superb thing to do requiring appreciation. Despite the above fact the salary of these professional is what causes the impact of above efforts not to be seen, I mean there is a say "you choose an easy way, you live an easy enjoyable life" and if you choose a tough complicated way , you live that life. So let me take an example I don't mean to offend any one, a man studies a short course with 3 periods a week, although its tough for him to get a job but when he/she does u forget about him/her, I don't reflect only on salary but on seminars, trips per day's and i tell you these people are united, friendly and cooperative and their families are stable because they go home early. But for medicine its the opposite busy everyday, classes on weekends sometimes and when you are done work is hectic you may be on call for 24hrs and mostly family instability no unity, uncooperative. I chose this field because i enjoy the work and i love treating people I assure you there is no pleasure like seeing your patient( the man who came seriosly ill) is well and you can discharge him .but come the end of the month am doomed and ask myself why am i here? i dont it for the money but life forces me to do it, rent for the house, daily bread and etc. You know what that's why you find most of doctors now study MBA and MPH after either their 1st, or 2nd degrees and some even after their PhD's. If you don't do that, then you have to work in 3 hospitals different shift's to earn the living and still you come home your son asks you Daddy or Mommy you are so busy but we always eat the same meal (bread and tea in the morning and Rice and beans for lunch and dinner). Thus for those who love their country stay some who want to impress with debts and for those who don't people are surprised how can a doc leave here resulting into frustrations and heavy drinking. And for those who get the opportunity they discover where the green pasture is and go for it, there are some few African countries who know the value of a doctor where a doctor is given a salary plus fringe benefits, I mean, a house, car and your kids taken to school by the government. These countries are Namibia and Botswana, and if they go to either USA, UK etc, they never think of coming back. Some might say doctors demand too much but sincerely that's not true, thats why for those who know create some environment to secure them. Even if you have a lot of money to buy cows make sure you either have enough green land to feed them or enough money to buy green grasses otherwise they may die of hunger or they will escape for the green grasses. I believe everything is possible, its the matter of Government priority, we have seen a lot been done and we have a lot of resources still we declare ourselves poor. Don't you think the government cannot do anything about it? Do you believe it? Otherwise we will dream to reduce the doctor patient ratio in our countries. FROM DR.
