On Friday, the former President of Tanzania Ndugu Benjamin William Mkapa will be the chief guest of Kampala Alumni Reunion at Uganda’s oldest and biggest tertiary institution, The Makerere University.

Mkapa will also be awarded an honorary doctorate degree (PhD) for his exemplary leadership and democratization process of Tanzania - Mr. Gilbert Kadilo, the spokesperson of Makerere University said.

The reunion of the alumni is aimed at raising funds to improve the University infrastructure and other conditions of learning.

Mkapa is an old student of the University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (1957 - 1962) .

Mkapa ruled Tanzania for two terms (1995 - 2005), before he was succeeded by the incumbent Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. The Ugandan University also educated the founding President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
