Gladiators disappoint against Tanzania
Namibia’s Brave Gladiators let in two soft goals in a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Tanzania in their Women’s African Champions Cup qualifying match in Windhoek on Saturday afternoon.
The first goal was a shocker - a freekick by Tanzanian striker Asha Rashid that floated high over Namibian keeper Susanna Eises into the goals on 64m, while Omary Mwanahamisi broke through the defence to beat Eises from close range in the 87th minute.
Namibia now have a mountain to climb as they will have to score at least three goals in the away leg in a fortnight’s time to go through to the next round.
Namibia did most of the attacking with especially Thomalina Adams showing a lot of pace down the right wing.
On 22m, Juliana Skrywer latched onto an Adams cross but her shot was well saved by the Tanzanian keeper, Fatuma Omaryjawadu.
Two minutes later Adams was once again the provider but this time Skrywer could only manage a weak header which was easily saved.
At the end of the first half, Tanzania’s keeper did well to keep out a Namibian corner, while at the other end Namibian keeper Eises saved well at the feet of Mwanahamisi.
Namibia continued to create chances in the second half but they could not put them away.
A freekick by Shirley Cloete was well saved while Stella Williams came close with a header.
Tanzania took the lead against the run of play when they won a freekick on the left flank and Rashid sent in a cross that flew over Eises’ head into the back of the net.
Iina Katuta, who came on for Lorraine Jossob missed an open goal on 68m when she shot wide at the far post with no defender in sight.
With time running out, Tanzania once again caught Namibia on the counterattack as Mwanahamisi broke clear of the defence and beat Eises from close range with a low shot into the right hand corner.
