In the framework of the recently approved Research Unit ”Kilimanjaro ecosystems under global change: Linking biodiversity, biotic interactions and biogeochemical ecosystem processes” funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)

We are seeking excellent young scientist for the following projects:
- Data base/Knowledge Management (Postdoc position)
- Animal Ecology (Postdoc position)
- Climatology and Remote Sensing/Modeling (Postdoc position)
- Controls on ecosystem water use and carbon gain (2 PhD positions)
- Soil nutrient cycles and biosphere-atmosphere exchange (2 PhD positions)
- Tropical Plant Ecology (2 PhD positions)
- Plant functional traits and ecological modelling (2 PhD positions)
- Vertebrate Ecology (2 PhD positions)

The main objectives of the research unit are (1) to relate climate and anthropogenic disturbance to both biogeochemical processes and genetic, species and interaction diversity, (2) to quantify biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships along altitudinal gradients and (3) to estimate resilience and adaptive potential of natural and modified ecosystems to global change.

Scholarship funds amount to NOK 1.000.000,- (approx. Euro 125.000,-/US Dollars 150.000,-) will be awarded to Ibsen-related projects world wide.

The International Ibsen Scholarships were initiated by the Norwegian government and will be handed out for the third time in 2010.

We wish for as many relevant applications as possible, from projects throughout the world. The scholarships are meant to act as incentives for critical discourse in regards to existential and society-related subject matters concerning Henrik Ibsen.

Scholarships are applicable to individuals, organizations or institutions within the artistic and cultural communities.

The International Ibsen Scholarships are awarded annually and the applications are subject to scrutiny by an appointed jury. Previous years, projects from Asia, North-America, Europe, Africa and Australia have received scholarships.

The presentation of the scholarships is staged in Ibsen's birth town, Skien in Norway in September 2010 and coincides with Skien International Ibsen Conference.

Masdar Institute is seeking an individual with extraordinary technical skills and a keen interest in laboratory research to serve as a full-time Research Engineer/Laboratory Manager for laboratories in the ME, MSE, and WEE programs. 

The primary responsibility of this position will be:
(1) the day-to-day maintenance and operation of laboratory instrumentation,
(2) design and construction/assembly of small-scale laboratory apparatus, and
(3) development of equipment specifications for equipment acquisition/purchasing. 

The individual will also be expected to collaborate on research projects with faculty, teach laboratory modules of courses, and train graduate students and post-docs working in these labs.  Specific technical skills needed for this position include the following:
  1. Knowledge on the workings of most, if not all, of the following laboratory analytical instruments:  Chromatography-based instruments (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, and IC), metals analysis instruments (AA and ICP), elemental and TOC analyzers, spectrophotometers, spectrometers, colloid characterization equipment (particle count/particle size/zeta potential), and fluid property characterization equipment. 
  2. Electrochemical characterization techniques including EIS, CV, galvanic charging/discharging techniques; lithium-ion battery testing; composite solid polymer electrolytes and structure-property correlation of polymer materials.
  3. Experience in setting up data logging or instrument control interfaces from laboratory instruments or sensor networks to PCs using LabVIEW or similar software.
  4. Ability to set up gas or liquid flow-through experimental apparatus using Swagelok® or other similar fittings.
  5. Wet chemistry skills involving the handling and storage of organic solvents and corrosive chemicals.
The successful candidate should have at least five years experience. A Ph.D. degree or Masters’ degree in an engineering or science discipline is highly desirable.  Salary compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.  Housing and benefits will be provided.

The group of Networks and Distributed systems at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo
is announcing a PhD scholarship in the area of middleware for distributing and disseminating information
in large-scale dynamic systems.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
A PhD position is a regular job with social benefits and with salary starting from 353.000 NOK per year.

The currently open positions are for three years with a possibility to apply for extending the time period to
4 years. A 4 year position means that 25% of the time will be for duties beyond the normal research and project work, such as teaching and supervision of master students.

Tropical Biology Association (TBA)

The TBA Postgraduate Scholarships are annually offered by the Tropical Biology Association to its African alumni which are funded through a consortium of TBA funders. The scholarships are to help African alumni undertake postgraduate studies after they have attended TBA courses. They are part of the TBA alumni follow up support programme designed to promote human resource development and strengthen professional expertise among African biologists in biodiversity conservation and research.

Scholarship includes:
  • Funding granted for up to two years of study leading to the award of a Masters degree.
  • Depending on the proposed study programme, the scholarship will include tuition fees, travel costs, study materials, and a modest living allowance.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be nationals from Africa who have attended a TBA course.
  • Priority will be given to those who attended courses since 2001.
Applicants must pursue a postgraduate degree that will directly enhance their research and conservation skills that is relevant to their own country.

The Gordon R. McCulloch Scholarship is awarded to a student from an African or Latin American country as classified by the UN. The scholarship will be worth £5,000.

Eligibility The scholarship is open to applicants who are citizens and residents of African or Latin American countries, as classified by the UN, and who are applying for admission onto the Full-time MBA or MBA in International Business in September 2010. Applicants who hold full sponsorships or who are entitled to fee omission are not eligible for the scholarship. If an applicant is successful in being awarded the scholarship, but subsequently declines their offer of admission on the MBA programme, the award of the scholarship will be withdrawn and awarded to another applicant.

Criteria The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the benefits to the student. The decision will be made by a committee consisting of the Director of the Full-time MBA programme, the Director of the MBA in International Business and the Admissions Officer. Selection Procedure The winner of the scholarship will be announced by the University in June 2010. The successful applicants will receive the award in person during the MBA programme Induction week in September 2010. Although applications for the scholarship should be made before 31 May 2010, the scholarship will only be awarded to an applicant who has firmly accepted their offer through payment of the deposit.

The University will also award in 2010-2011 the Calum Miller Scholarship to a student who has been accepted onto the Full-time MBA programme or Full-time International MBA programme, taught in The University of Edinburgh Business School. Candidates should have an excellent academic record and be a citizen or resident of a country (for a minimum of three years) in South America or Africa as defined by the UN. Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa is pleased to announce its call for applications for the 2010 Moremi Leadership Empowerment and Development (MILEAD) Fellows Program for young African women leaders.

The MILEAD Fellows Program is a one-year leadership development program designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and succeed in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole. The one-year program targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that help them tackle issues affecting women in their communities.

The MILEAD fellowship will be awarded to 25 young women with exceptional qualities who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession. To be eligible for the one-year program, an applicant must be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora; agree to participate in all required activities related to MILEAD including a three-week residential Summer Institute in July-August; and commit implement a community project as part of the program. Applicants must be between 19 - 25 years of age. Specific requirements of the program and related dates are outlined in the application package.

Please note that this is not a full-time fellowship. Selected candidates may remain full time students or work full time for the program duration, except during the 3–week summer institute. The 3-week summer institute is an intensive and full-time residential program and all fellows will be required to attend. The rest of the program involves community-based, online and other distance activities. Applications are welcome from young African women living in any part of Africa and the Diaspora. The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is calling for applications for the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, which is open to full-time, part-time, or freelance women journalists working on human rights or social justice issues. Recipients spend nine months in an academic research programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States (US). During that time, Neuffer Fellows may also work with the Boston Globe or The New York Times. The Neuffer Fellowship includes: housing; a stipend to cover meals, ground transportation, and other living expenses; and health insurance. It does not provide a salary or honorarium.

The fellowship is named for the 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner and Boston Globe correspondent who was killed in Iraq in May 2003.

Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism. Non-native English speakers must also have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the programme. The fellowship will run from September 2010 - May 2011.

The Center for International Health (CIHLMU) at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich will open applications for the PhD-Program in International Health starting in autumn 2010.
