Prof. Penina Mlama succeeds Prof. Issa Shivji at Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies

 This is to inform the University of Dar es Salaam community and the public that, following the retirement of Prof. Issa Shivji, the position of Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies fell vacant.

The University Council at its 220th meeting held on 30th January 2014 appointed Prof. Penina M. Mlama to the position of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies.

Prof. Mlama is a Professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, College of Humanities (CoHu). She has served the University of Dar es Salaam in different academic and managerial positions for many
years. She was Head of the former Department of Arts, Music and Theatre (1982–1987); Associate Dean, Research and Publications of the then Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (1988–1990); Chief Academic Officer of the University of Dar es Salaam (1991–1998); Executive Director, Forum for African Women Educationalists (1998–2007) and Executive Director, Campaign for Female Education (2007–2010). Her service to the nation has also included directorship in various local and international organisations, as well as serving as chair and member of various national and international boards and committees.

A re-known artist and author, Prof. Mlama has carried out many research undertakings and consultancy projects, and has published books and journal articles on a wide variety of subjects, mostly on the subject of education in Africa, gender and theatre education. Besides, she has published several plays and performed amateur theatre and film production of which she received many awards, honours and grants. Prof. Mlama was awarded the University of Dar es Salaam Golden Jubilee Award in 2011.

We congratulate Prof. Mlama and wish her success in fulfilling her obligations as holder of the Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies.
