Rays of Light Exhibition imprints its foot in Tanzania

After visiting France, Portugal, United States, United Kingdom, UAE, Uganda, and Canada, the Rays of Light: Glimpses into the Ismaili Imamat, finally makes its hallmark debut on Tanzanian soil. The much-anticipated Exhibition marks a significant milestone for Tanzania as it coincides with the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Union of Tanganika and Zanzibar.

MATUKIO ya utelekezaji wa mke na watoto nchini Tanzania bado ni changamoto kubwa katika jamii. Licha ya matukio haya kutofautiana kutoka eneo moja hadi lingine bado yanachochewa na kulegalega kwa sheria za nchi ikiwemo sheria ya ndoa ya mwaka 1971 kwa baadhi ya vipengele.

Waathirika wakubwa wa matukio haya ni mama pamoja na watoto ambao ndio hutelekezwa huku baba aliyetelekeza familia hiyo kutokomea sehemu nyingine na kwenda kuanzisha familia nyingine, ambayo nayo uhai wake huwa mashakani.

Hivi karibuni mwandishi wa makala haya kwa ushirikiano wa Chama cha Wanahabari Wanawake (TAMWA); alifanikiwa kutembelea Wilaya ya Nkasi, Mkoa wa Rukwa na kufanya utafiti wa kihabari kuangalia matukio ya kiunyanyasaji na ukatili ambayo huwakumba wanawake na watoto katika wilaya iliyotajwa.

Deposits of minerals like oil and natural gas are a valuable heritage of all generations in the countries owning them; non renewable once extracted; and the most important source of the readily available sources of seed capital mineral rich underdeveloped countries like Tanzania could have extracted for investing to liberate their populations from extreme levels of poverty and continuing dependence on foreign aid.

In ‘well organized’ auction TRA sells back to owners, a seized cargo worth $160m

Tanzania Revenue Authority has sold back to the owners a seized consignment of dry hides worth over $160m through a ‘well organized’ auction, reveals Tanzania’s The Guardian newspaper.

That, while TRA was investigating SAK International, a company owned by a group of Pakistani nationals for involvement in the illegal exportation of the raw hides, the Pakistanis are said to have hoodwinked TRA to get back the goods through another company name.

Amaal Investment, the company that bought the hides at the auction on 24 January, this year is allegedly owned by one Amaal, daughter of Asim Mahmood, one of the SAK International directors.

The three containers weighing 80 tons of dry hides were worth some Sh160 million in November last year when they were detained at the port, but were subsequently sold off at Sh50 million during the auction. Tanzania reviewing all tax exemptions granted in past 5 years

“What the minister wants to establish are possible abuses of the exemptions as well as those which have no benefit to the nation.”
The  newly appointed Deputy Minister, Mwigulu Nchemba is quoted by The East African newspaper as saying the above statement, a move following the country’s Controller and Auditor General (CAG) subjecting to special audit all tax exemptions offered by the government in the beginning of the financial year 2012/2013 and whose report is to be issued this April.

According to the annual audited financial report for the year that ended in June 2012, the government lost Tsh1.81 trillion ($111.7 billion) to exemptions, up from Tsh1.02 trillion ($63 billion) reported in the audited financial report for 2010/2011.

A source in the ministry of Finance told The EastAfrican that Nchemba, has instructed officials at the ministry to prepare a detailed report of individuals and companies that received exemptions for the past five years, with details of how much they received and why. Click here to read more
