Dar es Salaam is the fastest growing city in Africa, according to the latest report by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The report, ‘Tracking Africa’s Progress,’ which was released Monday has projected that Dar’s population will rise from 4 million to 6.2 million in the next one decade, surpassing Nairobi, which was ranked second—whereby the latter will rise from the current 4.3 million to 6.24 million by the year 2025.

Urgently needed: Land Rights & Governance Trainers

Land Rights Research and Resources Institute (LARRRI/HAKIARDHI) is a Tanzanian national level non-governmental, not for profit organization that was founded in 1994.

The Institute was established in recognition of the need to generate and sustain public debates, and participation in the rural areas on issues of land tenure. LARRRI has managed to spearhead the rights to land of rural and peri-urban based small producers through activist researches, lobbying and advocacy for policy changes, critical analysis of policies and laws and active participation in policy processes. The Institute conducts land rights training through district and grassroots level workshops, monthly seminars, national public fora, training of trainers, media programmes and wide dissemination of her publications.

Currently, the Institute is implementing a land rights and governance programme in

Study finds that bacteria live in healthy placentas; Questions arising: How that and mother's oral health influence pre-term birth risks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Surprising new research shows a small but diverse community of bacteria lives in the placentas of healthy pregnant women, overturning the belief that fetuses grow in a pretty sterile environment.

These are mostly varieties of "good germs" that live in everybody. But Wednesday's study also hints that the make-up of this microbial colony plays a role in premature birth.

"It allows us to think about the biology of pregnancy in different ways than we have before, that

Oregon bans GMO crops

NPR reports that voters in two southwestern Oregon counties voted to ban genetically modified crops on Tuesday.

"It's a great day for the people of Oregon who care about sustainability and healthy ecosystems," the advocacy group GMO Free Oregon said on its Facebook page.

A measure in Jackson County was approved by a 2-to-1 margin, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting, while 58 percent of Josephine County voters gave their support.

Opponents of the bans, backed by corporations such as Monsanto, Syngenta and DuPont Pioneer, spent more than double the amount raised by supporters. But it wasn't enough.

Earlier this month, Vermont became the first state to require food producers to label products with genetically modified ingredients. Maine and Connecticut have approved similar requirements that would take effect if and when other states follow suit. A big-money fight in California led to voters narrowly rejecting a labeling requirement in 2012.
