Tanzania, Burundi not part of deal for single tariff on phone calls

In a statement released last week, Communication Ministers John Nasasira of Uganda, Jean Philibert Nsengimana of Rwanda, Dr Fred Matiang’i of Kenya and Juma Stephan Lugga of South Sudan said the regional framework for the One NetworkArea would apply to telephone calls originating and terminating within the region.

The statement further mandates member states to exempt regional calls from surcharges applied by local operators on international incoming calls as well as additional charges on subscribers on account of roaming within the region.
“There will be no charges for receiving calls while roaming within the region and subscribers travelling within the member states will be charged as local subscribers in the visited country,”
the statement says.

This will require telecom operators within the region to re-negotiate bilateral agreements to ensure full implementation of the OneNetwork Area by September 1 for Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda and December 31 for South Sudan, the ministers said. --- Click here for more

Mkasa wa ndege kutua barabarani kwa dharura

On Jul. 18, a Construcciones Aeronauticas SA Casa 212-200, N604AR flying from Entebbe International to Juba, in South Sudan, performed a successful emergency landing on a road in Kiwawu, in the Mityana district.

The aircraft experienced technical problems while enroute but ran out of fuel while returning back to Entebbe.

Fortunately, the pilots managed to perform a successful landing: the C212 was not damaged and the 9 people on board were not injured.

U.S. special forces are quite active in South Sudan and, generally speaking, in Africa. In such region, in order to keep a “low profile” and appear similar to general aviation aircraft during their clandestine missions, most of these special planes (civil registered aircraft used for military purposes) are painted in light gray or in white, as genral aviation/civilian planes.

The airline used to fly from Uganda’s Entebbe airport to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Bujumbura, Kigali, Mogadishu, Kilimanjaro, Mombasa and Juba; connecting the regional cities.
Air Uganda says its potential re-certification is weeks away and that lessors have recalled their aircraft, opening a window for carriers like KQ to grow passenger volumes in the regional destinations.
KQ flies from Nairobi to Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sudan and Rwanda, making it a major player in the eastern Africa aviation market. The national carrier draws 58 per cent of its revenues from African destinations, with the regional cities forming an important part of its Pan-African network.
Its margins are set to come under pressure in the medium term as its plans to take up to Sh87 billion debt to buy new aircraft, underlining the importance of revenue growth for the loss-making airline.
It remains unclear when Air Uganda may resume operations but the airline said its grounding has seen it record major losses. “Air Uganda, which is the only scheduled passenger airline affected, has inevitably suffered the greatest damage,” the airline’s CEO Cornwell Muleya said in a Friday statement.
“Each carrier was requested to submit a fresh application for an AOC (Air Operator’s Certificates), and in the meantime was required to cease operations, thus forced to incur massive financial losses on a daily basis and suffer reputational damage.”

Fastest growing cities are in Africa, Asia: World Urbanisation Trends 2014 report

"Mimi ninaona ufanyike uchunguzi. Mwanafunzi aliyepata B, mwaka jana angepata C na nina shaka waliopata A” - Olouch
