This week, NPR asked readers for questions they have about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

For answers to some of the queries, NPR turned to Dr. Darin Portnoy, vice president of the international board of Doctors Without Borders (known by its French initialism MSF, for Medecins Sans Frontieres). (Basic facts about the disease can also be found in NPR's Ebola 101 primer.)

  • Is it known in which species Ebola originated? Is the virus always around? Why does it pop up?

[Ebola] was identified in 1976. Episodically people come in contact with an animal that has the

I said to her, 'Right, now, we haven't got 150,000 pounds, but we have got that in equity in our house, so if you want to make the gamble, you just tell me and I'll build this road just to keep you happy,' "

Watts anafurahia mafanikio zaidi kwa kusema: "We are now on Google maps. It's wonderful."

AP: What's scary about Ebola and reasons not to fear it

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States' top disease detective calls Ebola a "painful, dreadful, merciless virus."

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak in West Africa an international emergency, killing more than 900 people and spreading.

That's scary and serious. But it also cries out for context.

AIDS alone takes more than a million lives per year in Africa - a thousand times the toll of this Ebola outbreak so far.

Lung infections such as pneumonia are close behind as the No. 2 killer. Malaria and diarrhea claim

By now, US President Barack Obama must know that a picture is harmless even when posed next to a fellow world leader facing crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court.

Mr Obama’s picture with President Kenyatta alongside his spouse taken in the Rose Room of the White House is like a homecoming for a prodigal son. For over a year, Mr Obama has oscillated between coyness and melodrama around meeting Mr Kenyatta.

All this was likely because the Pre-Trial Chamber II of the ICC confirmed murder, rape, torture and

Palestine Solidarity: African scholars and scholars of Africa

We, the undersigned African scholars and scholars of Africa, hold that silence about the latest humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israel’s new military assault on the Gaza Strip—the third and most devastating in six years—constitutes complicity. Member state of NATO which mounted an air war on Libya ostensibly to protect civilians in Benghazi have been by and large quiet about the fate of civilians in Gaza. World governments and mainstream media do not hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law. We, however, as a community of scholars have a moral responsibility to do so.

Neither the violation of international law nor the destruction of Palestinian life in Gaza, however, began or will end with the current war[1]. The suffering of Palestinians is not limited to Gaza: the occupation and dispossession in East Jerusalem, the Naqab (Negev), and the West Bank; the construction of walls and fences around the Palestinian population, the curtailment of Palestinian freedom of movement and
