Tanzania in top 10 countries that's lowered child mortality rates by more than two-thirds since 1990

WASHINGTON (AP) -- More of the world's children are surviving to their fifth birthday, but 6.3 million still died last year, mostly from preventable causes, the U.N. children's agency said Tuesday.

That's nearly 17,000 young children dying every day. And while death rates have been cut in half since 1990, the world still is short of meeting a goal of a two-thirds decrease in child mortality by next year, the report by the United Nations Children's Fund said.

"We're building momentum in many countries in the poorest parts of the world," said Dr. Mickey Chopra, UNICEF's head of global programs. The challenge is to spread what works.

India and Nigeria together accounted for more than a third of all the deaths, with

Pres. Obama's initiatives to Ebola crisis in West Africa

A look at some of the initiatives President Barack Obama is announcing to ramp up the U.S. response to West Africa's Ebola crisis:
  1. Assigning 3,000 U.S. forces to Monrovia, Liberia, where they will provide command and control support in the region for U.S. military activities and facilitate coordination with U.S. government and international relief efforts. A U.S. Army general will lead the effort.
  2. Help build 17 new health care facilities in the region with 100 beds each.
  3. Deploy 65 officers from the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps to manage and staff a previously announced Department of Defense hospital to care for health care workers who become ill.
  4. Establish a site in the region to train up to 500 health care providers per week to help them safely provide medical care to Ebola patients.
  5. Airlift 50,000 home health care kits to Liberia that can be used by people in remote communities. The U.S. will also train local populations on how to handle patients exposed to Ebola.

Mgando wa mawazo kuhusu uraia-pacha

(image: kbaxi.net)

25 Best Cities in the US for working parents

Business Insider partnered up with personal finance site NerdWallet to find the best cities for those with two jobs: employee and parent.

The analysis focuses on affordability (median income and housing costs), childcare costs, school quality, and the community (percentage of households with children) in the 100 largest U.S. cities.

Gilbert, Arizona, ranks No. 1 with an overall score of 72.5.

Following close behind in the No. 2 spot is Plano, Texas, with a score of 67.4.

Rounding out the top three is Chandler, Arizona — another Phoenix suburb.

Approximately 88% of U.S. families with children have one parent in the workforce, and 58% have two working parents.

"Working parents want to live in a city where their children are set up for success and where their hard-earned dollar stretches far," Raghavan says. "As parents are planning for their children's education and their own retirement, they have to make decisions now that will affect the rest of their lives."

(picha: blogu ya Curiosities And Oddities)
