Do Not enable iCloud Drive in iOS 8; Don't put iOS 8 on iPhone 4S

(image: itremotesolutions.com)

Apple's iOS 8 which goes out to the public today will work on iPhones up to 4S. But subjecting your iPhone 4S does not have the hardware to support some of iOS 8's biggest features, like Touch ID, AirDrop, and the Metal graphics API.

Online reports of those who tried it out such as Ars Technica, says that the phone offer about a quarter of the performance of the iPhone 5S, and an even smaller fraction compared to the newest iPhone 6. Apps launch more slowly—sometimes taking 50 percent longer to load—with herky-jerky transitions that hang and hesitate.

All of which is kind of secondary to the main problem: The 4S was the last of Apple's phones with a 3.5-inch screen. That size was once considered the golden rectangle of smartphones. But everything is bigger in the future, including iPhones, and the added rows of buttons and bars that appear in iOS 8 eat up valuable screen real estate on the great-granddaddy iPhone.

On the Cloud, iOS 8 comes with a ton of awesome features such as a new, better version of iCloud dubbed iCloud Drive. But don't enable it yet.

iCloud Drive changes iCloud from a clunky, invisible cloud storage system into a more Dropbox-like file system. It's great, but iCloud Drive is only compatible with iOS devices running iOS 8 and Macs running OS X Yosemite. If you enable Drive, your apps won't sync up properly until you have Yosemite installed.

When you're going through the set up process for iOS 8, you'll get an option to enable iCloud Drive, just chose "Not Now." Once Yosemite is released, you'll be able enable it on both your computer and your iOS device. The folks over at Realmac created a handy flowchart if you're confused.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2014

Excellencies,

Distinguished Colleagues,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I am pleased to address this august General Assembly for the first time as President of the 69th Session.  I am deeply humbled and honoured by the trust you have bestowed upon me, and my country Uganda.  I am convinced that together we will, as Member States, achieve a lot over the next 12 months in advancing the core values and principles of the United Nations for the betterment of the world and its peoples.

Distinguished Colleagues,

6 things highly confident people don’t do

Two decades ago, when the bullies at our high school called her a nerd for being a virgin and a straight-A student, my best friend Sara smiled and confidently said, “Thank you. I’m really proud of it.” She honestly was. What those bullies said never bothered her one bit. And this is just one tiny example of Sara’s incredible self-confidence.

I was reminded of Sara this morning when I received an email from a blog subscriber named Lane who is struggling with a similar bullying issue at a small community college where he’s taking classes. After describing his predicament in detail, he ended his email with this:

“I love your book and blog. Both have helped me get through a very low point in my life. But even though I’ve made progress, I often struggle with my self-confidence. These bullies really get the best of me. And I know my shattered confidence is motivating me to do what confident people don’t do. So what I need now more than ever is to learn how to follow in a confident person’s footsteps, in all walks of life.”

Therefore, in an effort to help Lane walk in Sara’s footsteps, here are some things highly confident people don’t do:

1. They don’t allow themselves to get caught up in drama.

– Some people love to stir up controversy and drama for no apparent reason. Don’t buy in to their

Ulevi na ugonjwa wa kujipiga picha (selfies)

Jared

Would you've known? Hiccups led researchers to Ebola in Guinea

"Most of us think of Ebola as sort of the cinematic portrayal of it — you know, bleeding out of the eyes and ears," Stern tells NPR's Audie Cornish in an interview on Morning Edition. "That happens, but it doesn't always happen, and it doesn't happen until the later stages of the virus."

In the early stages, he says, symptoms can look a lot like cholera and malaria. And since Guinea had never experienced Ebola, no one knew to look for it — not even people in the medical community.

"We tend to think of Ebola as a generally African scourge, but the last real outbreak had been more than 2,000 miles away," he stresses. "And it might as well have been another world for the people in the forest region of Guinea."

It wasn't until Dr. Michel Van Herp, an epidemiologist with Doctors Without Borders, noticed that half the patients listed on a medical report from Guinea had the hiccups that a light bulb went off.

"Hiccups is something that's associated — for reasons we're still not entirely sure of — with hemorrhagic fever, but especially with Ebola," Stern says.

Once they pinpointed the culprit, he says, aid organizations like MSF and the World Health Organization had an incredibly fast response — almost too fast. Health care volunteers were immediately sent in to track contacts and set up isolation wards, but public communication couldn't keep up with the efforts.
