C. Chachage: Wazanzibari siyo Waskochi

Chambi Chachage
Chambi Chachage

Watch the boy who tricked Ebola dance happily

In the area for Ebola-confirmed patients in the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Case Management Center in Foya, Liberia, roughly two-thirds of patients don’t survive the Ebola virus.

The patients receiving treatment gather on wooden benches and plastic chairs if they have the strength.

Other patients can only lie in bed while their immune systems try to fight the deadly virus in their bodies.

Mamadee, 11 years old, is different. As the other patients watch, he performs a dance to Azonto, a type of music that originated in Ghana, on the radio. He jumps, he ducks, he steps to the side, first left, then right, then left, then right, jumps again, turns, swings his hips and shakes his arms. He doesn’t stop, and he doesn’t get tired. It is difficult to believe, but Mamadee is an Ebola-confirmed patient. -- Doctors Without Borders / MSF

How to get children behave without shouting or hitting

There's plenty of evidence that spanking, paddling or hitting children doesn't improve their behavior in the long run, and actually makes it worse.

But the science never trumps emotion, according to Alan Kazdin, head of the Yale Child Study Center and author of The Everyday Parenting Toolkit.

After NFL star Adrian Peterson was indicted for child abuse after disciplining his 4-year-old son by hitting him with a switch, there's been a lot of conversation about how race and culture affect parents' approach to discipline. OK, what about the science? Behavioral psychologists say that people respond very predictably to others' words and actions, and parents can use that predictability to improve children's behavior without shouting or hitting.

We talked with Kazdin by phone about why parents use corporal punishment and what options they have for teaching good behavior. Here are highlights of that conversation.

Why do parents use physical discipline?

There are three reasons, Kazdin says. "The brain is hard-wired to pick up negative things in the

US FDA approves new injectable diabetes drug

The U.S.A. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new injectable diabetes drug from Eli Lilly and Co. named Trulicity, for adults with the type II diabetes mellitus.

A weekly injection, the drug is part of a new class of medicines called GLP-1 agonists, which spur the pancreas to create extra insulin after meals.
The AP notes that, the FDA approved Trulicity based on six studies in 3,342 patients that showed improvements in blood sugar control. The drug was studied as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with other commonly used diabetes drugs, such as metformin.

The drug will bear a boxed warning - the most serious type - highlighting that rats tested with Trulicity had cases of thyroid cancer, though it's unclear whether they were caused by the drug.

Lilly will be required to conduct follow-up studies on cases of thyroid cancer, heart problems and other potential safety issues with the drug. The FDA is also requiring Lilly to educate doctors about the drug's various risks.

Honourable Mr. Mark Diop, Vice President of the World Bank;
Distinguished Participants;
Ladies and Gentlemen;
Allow me to begin by thanking you Dr. Rajiv Shah for inviting me to participate in this Forum and for affording me the opportunity to share my thoughts on its very important theme of Ending Extreme Poverty. I commend the USAID for initiating this debate, and I hope participants will come up with pertinent proposals about ways and means to end this human degrading condition of our time. For those of us who live with this reality in our countries, it is heartwarming, indeed, to see that there are friends out here who care about the plight of the poorest and are ready to do what it takes to erase this scourge from the face of this planet.
