Judge rules: Iran and Sudan must pay $622 million to victims of US embassies bombing in Kenya, Tanzania

(CN) - The Republics of Iran and Sudan must pay $622 million in damages to victims of the August 1998 embassy bombings that killed hundreds of people, a federal judge ruled.

The suicide truck bombings took place simultaneously at the American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In addition to the 224 people who died, the attacks reportedly injured thousands of others.

In 2011, a federal court found the Republic of Sudan and the Islamic Republic of Iran liable for what it described as these "unconscionable acts."

In determining the damages, the court adopted the findings of special master Paul G. Griffin, who awarded $622 million to 12 of the 71 plaintiffs in the case.

Deutsche Welle: Donors freeze aid to Tanzania over fraud

Foreign donors are withholding aid to Tanzania following an alleged corruption case in which officials are accused of transferring $124 million (97 million euro) from the central bank to a private energy company.

Tanzania is likely to face an uphill struggle to implement its key development projects following a decision by foreign donors to withhold their aid funds. The decision came in the wake of an investigation into allegatons of corruption in the energy sector.

The donors, who had promised to inject $558 million (437 million euro) into Tanzania's 2014/15 budget, have so far only released 110 billion Tanzanian shilling ($65 million or 51 million euro). They insist that they will only release the rest of the budget after having seen a credible outcome of the investigations into the alleged graft.

Following donors fund withhold, Tanzania to borrow more to fund budget

Tanzania may borrow more to help finance its budget this year after foreign donors said they will withhold funding because of a corruption scandal, Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Servacius Likwelile said.

The U.K., Japan, Germany and other development partners including the World Bank announced last week they will keep back about four-fifths of the $558 million pledged for the country’s 2014-15 budget. Foreign loans and grants account for about 15 percent of Tanzania’s budget, and the withheld funds may derail major spending plans in an election year, said Ahmed Salim, senior analyst at Teneo Intelligence in Dubai.

“I cannot discuss more details of the alternative financing plans, but we have borrowing arrangements with the central bank,” Likwelile said in a phone interview on Oct. 15 from the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. “We can do more borrowing both internally and commercially.”

Worcester News cite satire website that Tanzania has Ebola

Worcester News, in the article by Gary Bills-Geddes that was First published Thursday 16 October 2014 in News and last updated 01:28 Friday 17 October 2014 on your website titled, "Ebola Fears Over School Trip To Tanzania" you mentioned that, "Rogers Kyaruzi, aged 23, of Atlanta is the second person to be diagnosed with Ebola in America. He recently returned from a trip to Tanzania and believes he may have contracted Ebola from a prostitute in Tanzania, with whom he had unprotected sex."

I wish to inform you that you copied information from a satire news site (please click here and read the bottom of the page) and published without knowing that there is no one in, or from Tanzania that has been diagnosed with Ebola. Please do not spread false information that may scare people and create unnecessary fear.

Unfortunately, you also made a blatant geographical mistake when you said, "Sierra Leone is on the east coast of Africa, while Ebola outbreaks have been affecting west African countries such as Sierra Leone - some 3,500 miles away."

Please note that in the map you so provided in the article, clearly shows that Sierra Leone is on the West. Had you done a little search and look in the map you probably would have avoided these obvious silly mistakes.

Lastly, please do read comments and suggestions left by readers on your website and do the needful.

Tanzania signs EAC pact with EU to bail out Kenya

Tanzania last night signed the European Union-East Africa Community trade pact, paving the way for the document to be forwarded to the European market for ratification.

The move gives Kenya exporters hope that they could soon start exporting goods duty free to Europe.

On Tuesday, EAC and the European Union reached a solution on the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs), which would allow Kenya and other EAC partners to avoid duty charged on goods exported to EU markets.

But while four EAC countries — Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi — had put their initials on the text, Tanzania asked to ‘consult’ first before signing.

The plight of Tanzanian housemaids in Oman

Tanzania’s embassy in Oman has taken steps to address long-standing complaints from domestic workers hailing from Tanzania.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media, an official with the embassy told The Citizen on Saturday, that the embassy had decided to take the measure following numerous complaints from Tanzanian domestic workers there.

“We have prepared a standard contract in order to safeguard rights for workers coming to work in Oman, this was due to the fact that majority of those who were brought here were treated contrary to promises they were given before coming here,” he said.
