Twitter now allows DM to and from any user

Twitter Senior Software Engineer Nhu Vuong in a blog post has announced a change t Twitter's direct messaging system, now allowing any twitter user to send a direct message (DM) to any other user, whether they follow the sender or not.

However, users will have to opt in to the new functionality.

Twitter says the changes also tweaks messaging rules "so you can reply to anyone who sends you a Direct Message, regardless of whether or not that person follows you," and makes a new Direct Message button on profile pages for Android and iPhone.

Changes include:

  1. A setting that allows you to receive Direct Messages from anyone, even if you don’t follow them. To change your settings follow these instructions.
  2. Updated messaging rules so you can reply to anyone who sends you a Direct Message, regardless of whether or not that person follows you.
  3. A new Direct Message button on profile pages on Android and iPhone. You’ll see it on the profiles of people you can send Direct Messages to.

Several Twitter users are saying that the new change will lead to more online harassment.
