DAIMA TUKO PAMOJA MPAKA MAISHA YAKO YAIMARIKE.

Call - CODESRIA Governance Research Program

Governance Research Program

International Conference
on
Public health governance in Africa

Date: November 12-13, 2015; Venue: Windhoek, Namibia

Application deadline: May 31, 2015

CODESRIA is a Pan-African membership research organization established in 1973 with the broad goal of promoting the work of African and Diaspora social scientists. The intersecting fields of governance and healthcare have for years been at the core of the work of CODESRIA with multiple research networks focusing on various aspects of these themes resulting in a series of cutting edge publications on these issues. The council has since 1992 also had an annual Democratic Governance Institute, which has over the years, focused on a wide range of themes. Similarly, it has had an Institute on Health, Politics and Society that broached many important themes including private healthcare systems, the global pharmaceutical industry, HIV/AIDS and the governance of African health systems.

The ongoing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Mano River Basin of West Africa has surpassed preceeding outbreaks in rates of infection, numbers of casualties and in the geographical spread of the disease. Its centering on three countries, which suffered greatly from the recent wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia has significantly set back post-conflict reconstruction processes that were underway in these countries. Importantly, while the disease has caused significant casualties, its impact on health systems, educational and security systems and economies, to name a few, may even be more damaging.

Unsurprisingly, the outbreak has brought to the fore many themes that often rise to the surface in debates on public health in Africa. Many of these issues, which had come up at the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic are being reharshed with new undertones and inflections. They include questions of global inequalities and their impact on public health in developing countries, the challenges of public healthcare provision and problems of social welfare and social security systems in developing countries and the intricacies of intra and inter-state relations in the face of healthcare challenges. Salutory efforts have been made by social scientists to encourage an approach to dealing with EVD that goes beyond a purely medical approach to raise questions of culture, economics and politics. These have led to interesting questions about the impact of histories of governmentality on epidemic control, the economics and politics of care and the social meanings of illhealth and wellness among others.

Through its conference on the theme ‘Public health governance in Africa’CODESRIA wishes to seize on opportunities for debate presented by the ongoing EVD epidemic to rekindle wider conversations about public health governance in Africa. While acknowledging the biological dimension of diseases and the systems that are (supposed to be) put in place to deal with them at a societal level, this conference will deliberately seek to insert conversations about these in broader discussions concerning economics, politics, culture and spirituality.

CODESRIA invites abstracts on the following themes from scholars and practitioners that are interested in participating in this conference:

· Global inequalities and public health delivery in African countries

· Histories of governance and public health systems in Africa

· African state evolution, structural adjustment programs and public health provision in Africa

· Public health governance and broader social policy regimes in Africa

· The social and cultural meaning of illness and good health

· The performance and representation of illness, good health, care and empathy

· The ethics, politics and economics of caregiving and biomedical research

· Epidemic control, popular culture and the arts

· Patents (property rights) and human rights in regimes of care

· Identity politics, integration efforts and processes of othering in the face of public health challenges

· The gendered dimensions of epidemics, epidemic control and public health governance in Africa

Those interested in participating in the conference, which will be held in Windhoek, Namibia onNovember 19-20, 2015 are invited to send their abstracts and CVs with full contact details including email addresses and phone numbers to CODESRIA not later than May 31, 2015. Yericko Nyerere: Watu wakweli wana nafasi gani Tanzania?

Aristotle alisema hivi:

“To say what is that is not or of what is not that is-is FALSE, while to say what of what is that it is, and what is not that is not-is TRUE!!

Naam, ‘a little truth drop in the bucket’ matokeo yake ni jamii kuamini uongo na kuufanyia kazi, ndivyo ilivyo hata hapa Tanzania.

“TRUTH is not determined by opinion poll or popular vote!”

Ukisema ukweli utaitwa msaliti! Kuna mifano tele katika Biblia, niiache wengine wananiambia hataki kusoma biblia.

Mara nyingi waongo huenda kinyume cha Historia-The wrong side of history.

Wapo akina Mandela wamesota rumande miaka 27, wapo wengine walifukuzwa kazi n.k

Cheka kidogo... Mume ataka kumsaidia mkewe...

Mume karudi nyumbani, akamuliza mkewe, nikusaidie nini? Mke akajibu, chukua huo mfuko, menya viazi nusu kisha uviinjike... ndivyo hivyo vinavyoonekana pichani.

Johns Hopkins undergrads win funding for bright new venture in Tanzania

In Tanzania for an internship last summer, Miguel Dias found himself spending a lot of time in smoke-filled rooms. Residents would often cook indoors using charcoal, and the smoke would saturate the small spaces. Not accustomed to it, "in just five minutes, I'd already feel faintish," said Dias, a Johns Hopkins University sophomore studying biomedical engineering.

Around the same time, Violet Ayoub, his internship director, told him about a relatively new innovation happening in Kenya—smokeless fuel briquettes made from agricultural waste. Several developing countries were experimenting with the briquettes as a cheaper, healthier, more environmentally friendly alternative to charcoal.

Using his engineering knowledge, Dias took his own approach to the technology, designing a new briquette-burning kiln model from an oil barrel. Ayoub let him set it up in extra space behind the headquarters of her NGO, Visions For Youth. With that, the two of them recognized a new venture in the making.

That venture, called Bright Energy Africa, now has recognition on a larger scale—and startup money to begin producing the briquettes. Last month, Dias and the team he recruited back at Hopkins—fellow Whiting School of Engineering sophomores Samantha "Yu" Wang and Yadel Okorie—were among the winners of the 2015 Social Venture Challenge at the Clinton Global Initiative University.

The competition received nearly 200 applications, and two dozen teams earned awards. The Hopkins team got $5,000 in seed funding, the highest amount awarded, along with ongoing networking and mentorship opportunities with industry leaders.

The big picture for Bright Energy Africa is ambitious: an enterprise that could create hundreds of jobs in Tanzania, with micro-franchises of the briquette centers set up in rural communities. Ultimately, Bright Energy Africa could be "100 percent owner-controlled in Tanzania," Dias says.

The briquettes could help preserve the environment, reducing the deforestation required for creating charcoal and wood fuel and making use of discarded farm products that are currently just burned. The smokeless briquettes could also improve health, reducing carbon monoxide and other harmful byproducts of the current cooking methods. "It'd be a very big impact on their lives," Dias says.

When he returned to Baltimore at the end of last summer, Dias turned his focus to the business plan. Okorie, a mechanical engineering major, helped on the financial side, and Wang, an electrical engineering major, worked on marketing. From Tanzania, Ayoub contributed through email and Skype sessions.

For the next several months, the goal is to use the $5,000 in seed funds—which Dias says goes a long way in Tanzania—to get the pilot production plant up and running in Arusha. The team is also working on other fundraising angles and entering other competitions.

The Social Venture Challenge, hosted by the Resolution Project, is an international business plan competition for undergraduates that is designed to inspire solutions to pressing social issues. The Hopkins team received its award last month at the annual Clinton Global Initiative University conference, held at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

Alexander Forbes eyes Ghana, Tanzania

SA’s largest retirement fund administrator, Alexander Forbes, has announced it is working on making an acquisition in Ghana within a year.

A successful deal in Ghana will expand Alexander Forbes’s footprint to seven African countries. The expansion would also be in line with the company’s plans to leverage off the pension reforms in countries such as Ghana and Tanzania.

"Tanzania is probably in the short to medium term. Ghana is more short term. The idea is to buy businesses that are small and leverage them with the brand (Alexander Forbes) and technology as well as the skills and grow that," Alexander Forbes Afrinet (rest of Africa network) MD Luendran Pillay said in an interview on Monday following the announcement of the company staff black economic empowerment deal.

Mr Pillay said the business Afrinet was acquiring in Ghana would potentially be in the employment space as well as consulting and actuarial space.

With a presence in Ghana there is an opportunity for Alexander Forbes to pursue business opportunities from its South African clients that do business in the West African country.

Mr Pillay said the company had done work in Ghana on a fly-in, fly-out basis, and that had given it an opportunity to test the market and the regulatory environment.

He added Alexander Forbes’s entry strategy in the rest of Africa was pension-fund reform in an Anglophone footprint.

It also involved leveraging off the existing infrastructure to support the African businesses.

Over the past three years about 10% of the company’s staff component in the rest of Africa received training in SA.

The staff training was important to embed the skills, technology, culture, risk and compliance measures that Alexander Forbes espoused.

As the company makes acquisitions it will also seek to grow the businesses organically.

As an example, Mr Pillay said the company was piloting the rollout of its retail client offering in countries such as Namibia, Botswana and Kenya.

Meanwhile, Alexander Forbes announced on Monday it was issuing 2.9% (about 39-million shares) of its issued share capital as part of an employee share-ownership plan aimed at promoting broad-based black economic empowerment.

Black women participants are expected to receive 70% of the distribution.
