Wreck of a 221 y/o trans-Atlantic slave ship confirmed off of South Africa

For some time, researchers suspected that the São José-Paquete de Africa, a Portuguese slave ship, had crashed in 1794 off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. But only now, after years of painstaking work, have they finally confirmed it.

Drawing on archival records from Portugal, diagnostic tests from material gathered during dives at the wreck site and even the captain's account of the ship, a team of researchers from a group called the Slave Wrecks Project has verified the São José's deadly end. Remnants from that ship, which picked up slaves in Mozambique and transported them to Brazil, will be loaned to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, or NMAAHC, for an exhibition called "Slavery and Freedom," set to open next year.

In a statement, Lonnie Bunch, founding director of NMAAHC, said,
"Perhaps the single greatest symbol of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is the ships that carried millions of captive Africans across the Atlantic never to return."

The discovery is significant, he said,
"because there has never been archaeological documentation of a vessel that foundered and was lost while carrying a cargo of enslaved persons. The São José is all the more significant because it represents one of the earliest attempts to bring East Africans into the trans-Atlantic slave trade — a shift that played a major role in prolonging that tragic trade for decades."

Photo Competition to reflect Modern Africa

PRESS RELEASE

Agility Launches Photo Competition to Reflect Modern Africa

Three Categories: Cities, Industry and Technology

CAPE-TOWN, South-Africa, June 1, 2015/ -- Agility.com, one of the world’s leading providers of integrated logistics, today launches a global photo competition to highlight the success of emerging Africa and reflect its increasing progress (www.africa2015.com).

The competition seeks to highlight the often unreported side of a continent of many contrasts. It calls for photographers to capture an Africa booming with tech-savvy, youthful consumers, fast-paced urbanization, and enormous long-term economic prospects.

“Much of the world’s perception of Africa is outdated,” said Geoffrey White, CEO of Agility Africa. “Today, seven out of 10 of the world’s fastest growing economies are in Africa. This photo competition is intended to highlight a dynamic market with opportunity. Too frequently, the world reports only the bad news from the Continent, when there is so much that is impressive that Africa can be proud of. We hope this photo competition will demonstrate some of the positives revealing the real progress and development that Africa is making.”

Agility is investing in Africa and is committed to building new logistics capacity, infrastructure and access for businesses and consumers across the Continent. The company’s strategy also includes a strong social and environmental program, focused on education, training and health.

“The photo competition is an engaging way to encourage amateur and professional photographers to present modern, fast-changing Africa through images that show its successes,” White said.

“We want to capture images reflecting the robust modernization happening every day, from sustainable farming to manufacturing to oil and gas production. We hope, as a result, perceptions of Africa will become more balanced, and they will come to see Africa as a significant contributor to the world economy.”

The competition, open to amateur and professional photographers, will take place from June 1 – September 1, 2015. Agility will award a $2,000 cash prize to the winner of each category, as well as a $4,000 grand cash prize to the photographer who shoots the overall winning image that best captures the development and growth across Africa. The winning photographs will be shown on a CNBC Africa telecast and published in Forbes Africa.

Tanzania awards $9 billion rail projects to Chinese companies

May 31 — Tanzania has awarded contracts to build new railway lines worth about $9 billion to Chinese firms, its transport minister said, expanding Beijing's presence in East Africa's second-biggest economy.

Transport Minister Samuel Sitta told parliament on Saturday a Chinese consortium had been awarded a contract to build a 2,561 km (1,536 miles) standard gauge railway connecting Dar es Salaam port to land-locked neighbours at a cost of $7.6 billion.

"A consortium of Chinese railway companies led by China Railway Materials (CRM) has been picked to help us build the railway line," he said.

The consortium will provide 10 percent of the funding for the project while financial adviser Rothschild is finalising procedures for financing of the project through banks, Sitta said.

The minister said construction of the railway line was expected to start in June.

He said Tanzania had signed a framework agreement with another Chinese company, China Railway No.2 Engineering Group Co. Ltd., to build a railway line linking coal and iron ore mine projects, also under development by a Chinese group, to the southern port of Mtwara near big offshore natural gas discoveries.

The 1,000 km standard gauge railway line is expected to cost at least $1.4 billion, according to the Tanzanian government estimates.

Tanzania said in March it planned to spend $14.2 billion to construct a new rail network in the next five years financed with commercial loans, as the country aims to become a regional transport hub.

Tanzania, like its neighbour Kenya, wants to profit from its long coastline and upgrade existing railways and roads to serve growing economies in the land-locked heart of Africa.

Oil discoveries in Kenya and Uganda and gas finds in Tanzania have turned East Africa into an exploration hotspot for oil firms but transport infrastructure in those countries has suffered from decades of under-investment.

Tanzania last year signed an agreement with China Merchant Holding International (CMHI) to build a new mega port and economic zone at Bagamoyo expected to cost at least $10 billion.

China is also financing a $1.2 billion, 532 km (330 mile) natural gas pipeline in Tanzania.
