How to make fresh flowers last longer

The life of fresh flowers is primarily affected by a limited ability to take up water and loss of food supply. Air or bacteria can easily block the small openings in the vascular (water conducting) system. Plants continually lose water through their stems, leaves, and flowers. Wilting occurs when the flowers do not take in water as fast as it is used or lost.

If your bouquet arrives in a box or sleeve instead of a vase of water, the following several steps will improve the lifespan of the flowers and foliage.

Leaves that will be below the water line in the container should be removed. Leaves in water will deteriorate and rot. Decaying leaves make a good medium for bacteria and fungi, which will plug the vascular system causing death.

Make sure the vase is clean. If in doubt, wash the container in a solution of one part bleach and nine parts water. Rinse thoroughly before adding flowers.

Re-cut the flower and foliage stems at an angle with a sharp knife. Remove at least one-inch of the stem. If possible the stem should be held under warm running water when making the cut. This is especially important in roses. Avoid crushing the stem and therefore the vascular system. The slanted cut opens more stem area for water absorption and prevents the end of the stem from resting directly on the bottom of the vase impeding water flow.

Immediately place stems into a container of warm (100 – 110 degree Fahrenheit = 37 - 43 degree Celsius) clean water containing a floral preservative. Most flowers take in warm water more efficiently than cold. Most florists include a package of preservative with the flowers. Follow the package directions. Preservatives prevent bacterial and fungal growth and contain sugar to feed the flowers. Home remedies, such as adding aspirin or copper pennies to the water, do not prolong flower life.

If your flowers come in a formal arrangement or vase of water, check the water level shortly after they are delivered and add warm water if needed.

Wilted roses may be revived by re-cutting the stem under water. Then submerge the entire rose in warm water by laying it in a sink or bathtub. After 20-60 minutes the rose should have absorbed enough water to reinvigorate it. Roses in tight bud, which are severely wilted at the neck, may not revive.

Flowers last longer if kept in a cool location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and drafts. You may wish to refrigerate your bouquet when not on display to extend its life.

Do not store flowers and fruit together. Fruits, especially apples, release ethylene gas that shortens flower life. Likewise, dying and damaged flowers and leaves emit ethylene and should be discarded as you notice them.

Check the water level daily and replenish as needed. If the water becomes cloudy, it should be completely exchanged for fresh.

A little care will keep your flowers beautiful for many days.

Wanaotuhumiwa kuwabaka walimu, kuwakata nywele, kuwaibia ATM cards "kishirikina" wakamatwa

Obesity linked to how you store food in your house

(image: drakeclosetdesign.com/pantries)

How food is set up around the house could be influencing how much people eat, suggests Charles Emery, a psychologist at Ohio State University in his latest research findings, published in April in the International Journal of Obesity

The researchers note that:
  • Not obese people were inclined to have less cold storage like refrigerator space and less food in the home.
  • Obese participants tended to keep more food visible in the places they spent the most time compared to non-obese people. [...] food was almost always close at hand for the obese individuals.

Tips: How to stop online shops from charging you more

When a website use your computer cache and cookies to determine what they should charge you, this is called "dynamic pricing".

Basically what happens is that retailers tap into your browsing and buying history, and even your physical location in order to figure out your ability to pay based on generalizations like how often you pay full price, what types of items you browse, and how affluent your zip code might be.

Lifehacker notes that dynamic pricing, in one form or another, has been used by online retailers like Amazon, Orbitz, Staples, and Home Depot to maximize their profits.

You may tell if the price a site is attempting to charge you changes randomly if the price changes. Here is how:
  1. Browse in incognito mode
  2. Disable third party cookies
  3. Check the price using your mobile device (especially if it's on phone data and not on WiFi using the same internet service as your laptop or desktop computer)

See if there is a difference in price for the same item in different browsers/tabs. By doing so, the site won’t be able to call on your spending habits and charge you accordingly.
  • Some sites will vary pricing based on whether you’re browsing from mobile, Mac, or PC. Also, do a quick price comparison to make sure you’re getting the best price available.

Do children really need life insurance?

Recently, we came across an ad for the Gerber Grow-Up Plan, "a whole life insurance policy that helps protect your child while saving for the future."

And frankly, it got us wondering: Do children really need life insurance?

As with most financial questions, the answer isn't an absolute "yes" or "no." It's "probably not."

Life insurance is only needed by people who have others dependent on their income, like parents of minors, explains Alan Moore, founder and certified financial planner at Serenity Financial Consulting.

"Life insurance can also be used to pay off debts or be part of estate planning for ultra-high net worth clients," he adds. "Notice that a newborn doesn't fall into any of these categories. Outside of the extremely rare case of the child supporting the family by being a child star, you simply shouldn't buy your child life insurance."

Moore isn't the only one who thinks life insurance for children is a waste of money. High-profile experts such as Dave Ramsay ("There is no need to buy a life insurance policy for your children"), Suze Orman ("Please, you new parents, do not let anyone talk you into buying a life insurance policy on your child"), and Neal Frankle ("They aren’t out there earning a significant amount of money, so why would you need life insurance?") have advised against it.

That said, there are proponents of buying life insurance for children. Aside from the child star case, they say that if a child were to develop an illness that would make them ineligible for life insurance later on, it's a good idea to get them covered early. And, if the worst were to happen, the policy could pay end-of-life and funeral costs. This, however, isn't a realistic concern for most children; it applies mostly to those genetically at risk for illness or medically compromised in some way.

Moore cautions that the problem with this theory in particular is that some life insurance plans don't offer enough coverage to make it an effective strategy. For instance, the Gerber Grow-Up Plan caps coverage at $100,000. "In the event of a child developing a condition, growing up, starting a family, and needing insurance, $100,000 won't put a dent in the amount of insurance they would actually need," Moore says.

The other potential benefit of getting life insurance for a child is that they may be able to use that money later down the line. Life insurance premiums are low for healthy children, and, since a whole life insurance policy does hold cash value, the policy could be an asset for a child when he or she becomes financially independent, points out Larry Rosenthal, CFP, a certified financial planner and the president of Rosenthal Wealth Management Group.

The bottom line: You need to do your research.

If your child isn't at risk for illness, you're looking for costs to eliminate, and you're financially stable enough to cover the bills should a medical emergency arise, life insurance policies for your smallest family members probably aren't necessary.

But of course, every family is different, and so are their coverage needs. Whether or not you're pursuing a life insurance policy for your child, Rosenthal recommends getting quotes from multiple companies before signing up for a plan, and, most importantly, taking in the fine print. "People have to understand what they're getting," he says. "It all comes down to the cost and the benefit."

Regulators warn of misleading reverse mortgage ads

WASHINGTON (AP) -- We've seen the TV ad pitches from celebrities like "The Fonz" Henry Winkler and actor and ex-senator Fred Thompson, touting the benefits of reverse mortgages for older homeowners.

Now U.S. regulators are warning: Don't be fooled. Many ads don't tell the whole story about reverse mortgages.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Thursday that a study it conducted with older homeowners found they were given the false impression by the ads that reverse mortgages are a government benefit and ensure consumers can stay in their homes for the rest of their lives.

The agency said people should be aware of the risks of reverse mortgages, which are loans for homeowners 62 or older that must be repaid with interest and can deplete seniors' funds.

Seniors taking out reverse mortgages can even lose their homes. About 10 percent of borrowers end up defaulting on their reverse mortgages, according to the agency - roughly double the rate of conventional home mortgages.

A reverse mortgage allows borrowers to receive cash or a line of credit tapping the accumulated equity in their homes. Seniors often take out the loans to help pay off credit card bills or remodel their kitchen. The loan isn't paid down in monthly installments. The loan balance increases and comes due when the borrower dies, moves or sells the home, or defaults on other obligations such as insurance or taxes.

Most of the mortgages are insured by the Federal Housing Administration. But they aren't a risk-free government benefit, a false impression that the CFPB found was given by the reverse mortgage advertising.

Most of the 97 different TV, radio, print and online ads reviewed by the CFPB failed to mention the risks of reverse mortgages, the agency said.

"Or, if they did, they were so buried in the fine print that consumers did not pick up on ... key aspects of the loan," CFPB Director Richard Cordray said in a conference call with reporters. "Indeed, many reverse mortgage ads did not even mention anything about interest rates, repayment terms or other crucial requirements of the loan."

Cordray said the regulators are especially concerned because reverse mortgages are complicated and are marketed to older homeowners, a group known to be vulnerable to deceptive advertising or pitches.

As part of its review, the CFPB interviewed around 60 homeowners aged 62 and older in focus groups and in individual interviews in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

The trade group representing reverse mortgage lenders said it has a code of ethics and specific guidance for ethical advertising for its members.

"We share viewers' concerns that any advertising should be accurate," Peter Bell, president of the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association, said in a statement Thursday. "As an association we are committed to educating consumers about the pros and cons of reverse mortgages, training lenders to be sensitive to clients' needs, and enforcing our code of ethics and professional responsibility."

Free until July: Sea Change Program - Eliminate debt and save/invest

How Taking Care of My Finances Changed My Life

By Leo Babauta

Looking back on my life a decade ago, I just wasn’t taking care of myself.

I was overweight, deeply in debt, a smoker, junk-food addict, stressed out, clutter piling up all around me, I didn’t floss … my life was a mess.

And the solutions were so simple: little acts of self-care that really add up over time.

They’re so easy: go for a walk, do a few pushups, meditate for a few minutes, clear a little bit of clutter, take a minute to floss. But I put these things off, avoided even thinking about them, and my problems piled up.

One of the most stressful problem areas was my financial life. I had unpaid bills that I stuffed in a drawer because I didn’t want to face them. I had creditors calling, collection agencies whose calls I avoided. I borrowed money from family, even from my kids’ piggy banks, just to put food on the table until my next paycheck. I’m not proud of any of this.

I was constantly stressed out, and even though I avoided thinking about the whole mess, it was always on the back of my mind. Some of you know the feeling of desperation that you’re not going to make it, that you won’t survive until your next paycheck. That’s what I was going through. And then there’s the feeling of helplessness when you don’t think you can get out off the hole you’ve dug yourself into.

So what happened to turn things around?

I took some small steps of financial self-care:
  1. I made a simple list of all my bills and the amounts I owe.
  2. I prioritized them in terms of urgency, and made a plan to pay them off. If they were equally urgent, I paid off the smaller ones first just to shrink my list of bills.
  3. I started canceling subscriptions and other payments I didn’t really need. I eliminated all but the essential.
  4. I started saving, even if it was just $20 a paycheck at first.
  5. I started regularly reviewing and taking care of my finances (weekly).
  6. Eventually I increased my savings and started investing as my debts became paid off.
  7. I took on extra jobs to pay off debts faster.
  8. I learned how to automate my finances so I didn’t have to think about them as much.

It was a slow process, but these small steps of self-care changed my life. Soon my debts became manageable and then became zero! My savings slowly grew, and then I transitioned to investing in low-fee index funds. My bills came under control, and I developed a fundamental financial safety that has been a keystone to my peace of mind in the last 10 years.

It didn’t happen overnight, but it did change. And I’ve been so much happier ever since.

What can you do if you’re in a similar situation? Start to see these simple financial steps as a part of taking care of yourself. Just as you should take care of your hygiene, you should take care of your bills and savings. That doesn’t mean you need to think about it every minute of the day, or even every day … just regularly.

Once you start this simple form of self-care, you’ll be amazed at the changes you’ll see.
