Here are 5 fun things you can do while visiting in Tanzania

Home to Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro and a vast wilderness which harbors the big 5 game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), Tanzania is one of the several tourist hubs in East Africa.

From commercial capital Dar es Salaam, to the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania offers an array of options for tourists.

So whether you're looking to relax on pristine white beaches or enjoy a spot of city night life, you can be sure that there'll never be a dull moment in this activity hot spot.

Meanwhile, here are 5 fun things to do in Tanzania:
  1. Go on a ferry ride to Zanzibar: Zanzibar which is an autonomous country of Tanzania, is just an hour away from Dar es Salaam by ferry. Enjoy the hitch-free ride to the lovely island nation, and while in Zanzibar, be sure to explore the island's beaches and sites.

  2. Go snorkeling/scuba diving: The lovely waters in Zanzibar make for the perfect location to either go snorkeling or scuba diving. You can also swim in the non-tidal beaches found in some spots on the island.

  3. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro: This 5,895 meter-tall mountain stands as the highest in Africa, and attracts climbers from all over the world. Asides the 3 peaks of the mountain, there are several tour options which allow for different climbing abilities. But if mountain climbing isn't your thing, then you can explore the natural park which surrounds the mountain and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  4. Balloon Safari over the Serengeti National Park: Take a tour of the Serengeti National Park in a hot air balloon. As imagined, this offers an incredible view of the park, not to mention the fact that the tour often includes champagne breakfasts in the bush followed by a drive through the national park.

  5. Boat safari in Selous Game Reserve: This is the largest game reserve in Africa and one of the largest protected areas in the world, and the Rufiji River is a main geographical feature to the reserve. So boat safaris along the river can provide the opportunities to see a wide range of flora and fauna.

Aliyeongoza Kidato cha Sita 2015, Ramadhani Gembe

Ramadhani Gembe
Ramadhani Gembe

“Siku zote nilikuwa naombea niingie 10 bora, najua leo Mungu amejibu maombi yangu.

“Vijana hawajatuangusha, tulitegema watafanya vizuri ila siyo kiwango hicho. Sisi kama walimu na uongozi wa shule tumefanya tuwezalo kuwawezesha kwa kuwafundisha na kuwapa ushirikiano lakini lazima wazazi watambue kumleta mtoto tu Feza si kwamba anakuwa bora, lazima kuwe na ushirikiano mzuri baina ya pande zote,”
alisema.

US dismantles major computer hacking forum

As Part of Coordinated Law Enforcement Efforts in 20 Countries, United States Charges 12 Defendants in Connection with Computer Fraud Conspiracy.

It was, in effect, a one-stop, high-volume shopping venue for some of the world’s most prolific cyber criminals. Called Darkode, this underground, password-protected, online forum was a meeting place for those interested in buying, selling, and trading malware, botnets, stolen personally identifiable information, credit card information, hacked server credentials, and other pieces of data and software that facilitated complex cyber crimes all over the globe.

Unbeknownst to the operators of this invitation-only, English-speaking criminal forum, though, the FBI had infiltrated this communication platform at the highest levels and began collecting evidence and intelligence on Darkode members.

On Wednesday, the US Department of Justice and the FBI—with the assistance of their partners in 19 countries around the world—announced the results of Operation Shrouded Horizon, a multi-agency investigation into the Darkode forum. Among those results were charges, arrests, and searches involving 70 Darkode members and associates around the world; U.S. indictments against 12 individuals associated with the forum, including its administrator; the serving of several search warrants in the U.S.; and the Bureau’s seizure of Darkode’s domain and servers.

The following defendants face charges in the Western District of Pennsylvania:
  • Johan Anders Gudmunds, aka Mafi aka Crim aka Synthet!c, 27, of Sollebrunn, Sweden, is charged by indictment with conspiracy to commit computer fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He is accused of serving as the administrator of Darkode, and creating and selling malware that allowed hackers to create botnets.Gudmunds also allegedly operated his own botnet, which at times consisted of more than 50,000 computers, and used his botnet to steal data from the users of those computers on approximately 200,000,000 occasions.
  • Morgan C. Culbertson, aka Android, 20, of Pittsburgh, is charged by criminal information with conspiring to send malicious code. He is accused of designing Dendroid, a coded malware intended to remotely access, control, and steal data from Google Android cellphones. The malware was allegedly offered for sale on Darkode.
  • Eric L. Crocker, aka Phastman, 39, of Binghamton, New York, is charged by criminal information with sending spam.He is accused of being involved in a scheme involving the use of a Facebook Spreader which infected Facebook users’ computers, turning them into bots which Crocker controlled through the use of command and control servers. Crocker sold the use of this botnet to others for the purpose of sending out massive amounts of spam.
  • Naveed Ahmed, aka Nav aka semaph0re, 27, of Tampa, Florida; Phillip R. Fleitz, aka Strife, 31, of Indianapolis; and Dewayne Watts, aka m3t4lh34d aka metal, 28, of Hernando, Florida, are each charged by criminal information with conspiring to send spam. They are accused of participating in a sophisticated scheme to maintain a spam botnet that utilized bulletproof servers in China to exploit vulnerable routers in third world countries, and that sent millions of electronic mail messages designed to defeat the spam filters of cellular phone providers.
  • Murtaza Saifuddin, aka rzor, 29, of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, is charged in an indictment with identity theft.Saifuddin is accused of attempting to transfer credit card numbers to others on Darkode.
The following defendant faces charges in the Eastern District of Wisconsin:
  • Daniel Placek, aka Nocen aka Loki aka Juggernaut aka M1rr0r, 27, of Glendale, Wisconsin, is charged by criminal information with conspiracy to commit computer fraud. He is accused of creating the Darkode forum, and selling malware on Darkode designed to surreptitiously intercept and collect email addresses and passwords from network communications.

Currency relief for Ghana and Tanzania; Nigeria in tight corner, Kenya and Uganda to worsen

EAST African central banks are having little success in stemming a rout of their currencies despite taking ever-more aggressive monetary policy action; the Kenyan shilling (KES) is particularly vulnerable as industry analysts say the KES is approximately 20% overvalued.

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are among the worst hit currencies in Africa this year as heightened risk aversion prompts investors to move money out of emerging markets. As import-dependent economies, the East African nations are exposed to foreign-exchange reversals, while dwindling reserves mean policy makers have little ammunition to halt the decline.

The Bank of Uganda raised its benchmark interest rate by 150 basis points at an unscheduled meeting on Monday, the third increase this year. That follows the decision by the Central Bank of Kenya to raise its key rate by a total of 300 basis points in two consecutive meetings.

“Domestic policy will have very little impact on the currencies,” Aly-Khan Satchu, the chief executive officer of Rich Management Ltd., an adviser to wealthy individuals and companies, said by phone from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. “It’s a strong-dollar story, a risk-aversion story.”

The Kenyan shilling has weakened 8.8% against the dollar in the past three months, Uganda’s currency has dropped 9.1% and Tanzania’s unit is down 8.4%. Only the Angolan kwanza is a worse performer in Africa in the past three months, slumping 12.8% against the dollar.

An industry brief to clients from Renaissance Capital indicates that in Kenya’s case, the slide is likely to fall even further: The Kenyan shilling is approximately 20% overvalued, inidicates the note authored by economist Yvonne Mhango, given the deviation of its real effective exchange rate (REER) from the 10-year average, and that its recent slide is smaller than the Euro/depreciation.

The analysts believe that recent policy tightening will slow the Kenyan shilling depreciation, but it will not halt it because weak exports, growing imports and a slowdown in financial inflows will weigh on the currency; as will US rate hikes that are due in the short term.

While Kenyan and Ugandan authorities have been pumping dollars into the market to support their currencies, the strategy is unsustainable and risks depleting reserves, Satchu said. Uganda’s reserves dropped 17% to $2.8 billion in May from a year ago, while Kenya reserves fell 9.8% to $6.6 billion since the beginning of the year to July 9.

Further weakness

“I expect further weakness in Kenya and Uganda units because the central banks are running out of ammunition and the dollar rally has still further to run,” Satchu said.

Kenya’s shilling gained 0.2% to 102 against the dollar as of 9.52 a.m. on Tuesday in Nairobi, while Uganda’s currency was unchanged at 3,280.

They all fall down: Perfect storm sends African currencies crashing (THE CHARTS THAT TELL IT ALL)

But of the East African Community’s three biggest economies, Uganda’s currency is the most likely to revert to its ‘fair value’, when its REER is compared to that of Kenya and Tanzania.

The analysis from Renaissance Capital shows that the Ugandan shilling (UGX) was fairly valued and had depreciated by a little more than the EUR/$ depreciation over the same period. Once the dollar stabilises, the analysts expect the Ugandan shilling to be one of the first of Africa’s undervalued currencies to retrace and move back towards its ‘fair value’.

The Nigerian naira is similarly overvalued by 20%, the brief indicates. But it is less vulnerable to sustained decline than the Kenyan shilling because its depreciation was better in line with the Euro/Dollar depreciation.

Still, given that Nigeria’s monetary policy is already exceptionally tight, there’s little scope for further policy tightening to defend the Naira.

On the other hand, the Ghanaian cedi and the Tanzanian shilling are most likely to retrace, with the analysts arguing that their recent depreciation was overdone as it exceeded that of the Euro against the dollar. In Ghana’s case, the cedi has already posted swift appreciation since June 30 when the International Monetary Fund gave it a thumbs up on its fiscal performance.

Analysis - Tanzania: A Young Country at a Turning Point

Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete congratulates politician John Magufuli in Dodoma on 12 July 2015, after he was nominated ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party's presidential candidate. Photo by Getty Images.

On 12 July, Tanzania’s ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) announced that Dr John Pombe Magufuli, currently the minister of works, will be its candidate in October’s presidential elections. An uncontroversial party stalwart, Magufuli will face a stark challenge in healing internal fissures in his party. Longstanding factionalism has deepened in recent years, intensified by disagreements over outgoing President Kikwete’s pledge to review the constitution, and intense competition between those vying for the presidential nomination. Magufuli’s election by the CCM national congress represents a concerted move by the party’s leading members to rally behind a unity candidate.
Political uncertainty

The CCM’s continuing dominance over Tanzania’s politics means it is highly likely that Magufuli will be the next President. But he will face significant long term challenges. The first is whether CCM can maintain its long grip on Tanzania’s politics. CCM’s share of the vote at the last election, in 2010, was 20 per cent down on previous polls. And apathy over the inevitability of a CCM victory saw overall voter turnout collapse to 43%. The October 2015 elections will be a real test of whether the party can rebuild its popular support base after this disappointing showing. And he will have to do it against a newly united opposition, as the political parties Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, the Civic United Front, NCCR-Mageuzi and the National League for Democracy, now plan to propose a single candidate under the banner of the Coalition of Defenders of People’s Constitution.

Secondly, a planned referendum on a new ‘people’s constitution’, promised by President Kikwete as an inclusive expression of the views of all Tanzanians, was postponed indefinitely in April. This has not only left President Kikwete without a clear legacy from his decade in power, but also highlights how the most contentious issues of Tanzania’s political dispensation have been left in limbo.

It remains unclear whether the referendum will happen ahead of October’s elections. And in any case, the proposed draft cements the status quo of Tanzania’s union structure, shutting out any debate about Zanzibari dissatisfaction over the extent of the islands’ autonomy from the mainland, and raising the potential for electoral violence on the islands. Traditionally, Tanzania’s vice-president is drawn from CCM in Zanzibar, and Magufuli’s selection of Samia Suluhu Hassan to share his ticket is a continuation of this trend. If elected Ms Hassan would be Tanzania’s first female vice-president − and would need to play an important role in representing and moderating the concerns of Zanzibar’s politicians and population over the state of the union, repeating a role she played as vice-chair of the constituent assembly brought together to debate the draft constitution.
Tanzania's youth

Magufuli will have to reconcile the inherent conservatism of these trends with the need to appeal to investors, and to meet the aspirations of Tanzania’s enormous youth population (over 51 per cent of the population is under the age of 18). Tanzania is currently the prime destination for foreign investment within the East African Community, receiving higher inflows even than the regional economic powerhouse, Kenya. The appeal of Tanzania’s beaches and safaris may also lead to greater revenue, as its tourism sector benefits from security concerns in Kenya.

However, it is the potential monetization of recent offshore gas finds that could be the economic game-changer for Tanzania – and the biggest challenge. Exports of LNG could eventually earn Tanzania up to $6 billion annually. Crucial to this will be careful management of the relationship between Tanzania’s new political leadership and the international oil companies with offshore stakes – relations that have, under the current government, frequently been hampered by lingering mistrust of the private sector, a legacy of the country’s long socialist history. If elected in October, Magufuli will also have to make good his past strong public statements against graft, with corruption continuing to blight Tanzania’s politics – during his tenure President Kikwete has sacked at least eight ministers due to graft allegations.

The acceptability of Tanzania’s October elections to the country’s citizenry will hinge on whether an ambitious, and long-delayed, biometric voter registration process can be completed ahead of the election date. In a country where approximately 6 million people have come of voting age since the last registration, ensuring the enfranchisement of young people will be key. Additionally, the country’s new president will need to bring young blood into the new government – particularly as prominent young politicians such as January Makamba, the current deputy minister of communication, science and technology, performed well in CCM’s presidential candidate race.

So while the approaching October election date now consumes the attention of Tanzania’s politicians, the country’s next president will have to take a far more long-term view of current and potential challenges. Tanzania’s new leader will have to balance efforts to improve service delivery, manage the development of Tanzania’s offshore gas to support inclusive domestic growth while remaining commercially viable, and bolster political stability – both within his party, and between Zanzibar and the mainland – without allowing corruption and continued CCM political hegemony to alienate external investors or Tanzania’s disenchanted youth.

4 Fast ways to stop energy drains in your house/business building

(image: energy.gov)

Just because the temperatures are soaring doesn't mean your energy bills should. Here are some handy tips on how to curb your energy use.
  1. Install a ceiling fan. A well-placed ceiling fan creates a "wind-chill effect" that lets you raise the thermostat four degrees without a drop in your comfort level. Find out where to install your fan and how big you need to go to make a difference here.

  2. Change air filters. A dirty filter makes your air conditioner work harder. And the simple act of replacing it can lower your system's energy consumption by up to 15 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Change the filter at least every three months, but check it monthly. If it looks dirty, swap it out.

  3. Switch out your bulbs. Those pear-shaped bulbs are costing you money. But replacing the five most-used incandescents in your house can save you $75 a year if you pick Energy Star-rated alternatives. Here's a guide to your choices.

  4. Stop energy drains. Your house is full of electronics that still consume energy even when they're not in use. How to curb these "energy vampires"? Unplug phone chargers when they're not in use. Set computers to sleep mode. Plug in groups of electronics (like your TV, game console and cable box) into a power strip that you can turn off, or go with a smart power strip that monitors use and does the job for you.
These are all relatively simple measures that can pay you back with cool savings during hot summer days.
