Wanafunzi 2 waeleza mabadiliko wanayoyataka

Over one thousand people attended the opening of the Jakaya M. Kikwete Youth Park in Dar es Salaam yesterday, as it was officially unveiled to the public for the first time by officials from Sunderland AFC (SAFC), Symbion Power, NBA Africa, and H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

The park which will provide a full-size 3G artificial turf football pitch, two five-a-side pitches, one sand-based pitch, and two football courts, will be open year round, seven days a week beginning on October 19, to help improve the sporting skills of the Tanzanian youth.

The opening event featured a variety of interactive stations, ranging from SAFC’s Head of International Football Development, Graham Robinson, delivering football sessions to over 500 youngsters, plus performances from the NBA Atlanta Hawks Sky Squad and an appearance from SAFC legend Kevin Ball.

As part of its involvement SAFC will provide the technical and practical support to the development of the park, which will see thousands of youngsters benefit from a joined up approach combining sport, education and community engagement, harnessing the knowledge and expertise of Sunderland AFC and its own successful academy.

Margaret Byrne, Sunderland’s CEO, at the launch said: “Community football was the starting point for many of our professional players. It provides the perfect structure to grow and develop as not only a player but also as a person. It teaches you the timeless qualities of leadership, responsibility, perseverance and teamwork.

“The facilities at the JMK Youth Park showcase Sunderland AFC’s ambitions for the communities it works within and will benefit a new generation of sporting stars in Tanzania, providing the perfect platform for youngsters in Dar es Salaam to nurture their talent and further develop themselves.”

The facility will also feature a centre of excellence dedicated to improving the skills of young Tanzanian footballers, with the centre scheduled to begin operations in January 2016 and will feature a programme specifically designed by Sunderland AFC.

Speaking at the event, President Kikwete said “After visiting Sunderland, the Stadium of Light and their academy, I thought yes this is a club we can work with and what I really appreciated is that you went beyond soccer and helped with our community. Sunderland are wonderful people and we hope to create great soccer players for the future.”

Symbion, a major American independent power producer with long-standing ties to Tanzania through the company’s various power plants in the country, helped develop and finance the park.

Paul Hinks, CEO of Symbion, said: “This is a labor of love not only for Symbion but also for Sunderland AFC and the NBA. What makes this special is those two organizations are providing support to give training so that we can bring up these standard of players who come to this facility to the sort of standards that come out of football academies and basketball academies overseas. “
