Tractor Training and Research Program Launch at SUA

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in partnership with John Deere and Innovative Agricultural Research Initiative (iAGRI) are jointly organizing the launch of a new tractor training program for farmers and tractor operators. The launch will be hosted by SUA and will be held at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Technology on 1st April 2016 starting at 10 AM.

The tractor training program will consist of three short courses: (1) tractor operations, (2) tractor mechanics, and (3) tractor-hire business management. This is part of iAGRI’s partnership with SUA to transform the university to be a pro-active provider of training, research, and outreach services of direct, practical relevance to farmers and agribusinesses. We have arranged for John Deere to donate a fully equipped tractor to SUA’s Department of Engineering Sciences and Technology, which in turn, is launching this tractor training program for farmers and tractor operators. About 300 participants consisting of farmers, private sector companies, extension workers, students, faculty, input dealers, traders and dignitaries are expected to attend the launch.

This is an important event in linking Tanzania’s major agricultural university, Sokoine University of Agriculture, and the private sector. This Public-Private Partnership is intended to strengthen the involvement of the private sector in higher education. Following the launch from 4th – 9th April, the first Boot Camp training sessions will be held at SUA for selected farmers, private sector companies, and input dealers.
