Private islands are something of an escape theme in 2016, and off the coast of Tanzania a new entry looks set to make a real mark. Thanda (www.thandaisland.com; from $10,000 per night), a 20-acre island estate owned by a Swedish technology investor and philanthropist, about 100 km south of Dar es Salaam – from which it’s accessible by private helicopter or boat – is now quietly available for weekly buyouts.
Beyond the whitewashed five-bedroom villa, whose cool palette brings something of a Gustavian sensibility to proceedings, are a few bandas and beach tents for kids and additional guests.
The owners offset the indulgence factor with real sustainability efforts; the entire island is solar-powered, and a percentage of lettings proceeds goes into education and health initiatives for the 60,000-strong local population of nearby Mafia Island.
