Preliminary reports according to police in Tanzania says ten people have died after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern region of the country.

More than 100 people were injured in the quake, which hit Kagera region on the western shore of Lake Victoria, regional police commander Augustine Ollomi said.

Widespread damage was reported following the quake, which also rocked the neighbouring regions of Mwanza, Mara and Simiyu.

The quake had its epicentre in Tanzania, according to sources at a volcanic observatory in the Congolese city of Goma, where the quake was also felt.
