Research in Action: Tanzania & Vietnam
A course in Advocacy Research and Ethical Service
Summer 2017
“It will focus on service-learning, along with international Advocacy Research, methodologies, and practices for ethical cross-cultural engagement,” explained Matthew Zielsdorf, ISDI associate director.
Program participants will be CWU students and peers from other universities. Students will receive academic credit through CWU’s junior level sustainable development course. It will include four week-long online modules and five-week in-county fieldwork; it will be taught by CWU faculty.
The Research in Action program will provide CWU students with the opportunity to engage in ongoing research on a variety of topics—from mosquito-borne illnesses to women’s rights. In addition, the coursework will address cultural dimensions that affect research approaches and practices in international settings. The cultural dimensions of the course will be tailored to the unique destinations of Tanzania and Vietnam.
“The students' work will also impact the communities in which they serve—conducting research to help affect positive social policy changes,” Zielsdorf added. “When they return to Ellensburg, the participants will be able to integrate their research into their studies here or present at SOURCE.”
ISDI, part of the university’s Office of International Studies and Programs, developed the program though a strategic partnership with IPSL Study Abroad + Service-Learning Programs, an established leader in sustainable international service-learning and ethical Advocacy Research.
