UNIDO seeking companies planning to invest in Tanzania’s green energy project

UNIDO is set to support Tanzania’s green energy project

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is implementing a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project entitled Promotion of waste-to-energy applications agro-industries of Tanzania.

In 2011, UNIDO undertook a study, Carbon footprint reduction in agro industrial sector of Tanzania, which focused on four agro-industries; sisal, dairy, tobacco and edible oils.

The study identified opportunities for reducing carbon footprints in the selected agro-industries,the result found that most of the industries were using carbon intensive technologies and contributing substantially to GHG emissions.

The primary carbon reduction opportunities in these industries were found to be the use of renewable energy for electricity generation.

This UNIDO/GEF project aims at promoting the adoption of WTE technologies, such as biomass gasification and anaerobic digestion, in agro-industries as a solution to reducing the carbon footprints of the agro-industrial sector.

As part of the project activities, a number of WTE power plant developer/investor will be supported to demonstrate the technical and financial viability of the technology. Support will be provided to the project developer/investor as capital grant support, to assist in developing the WTE power plant.
