Gmail/Google tip: How to sign in with your phone instead of a password

If you are tired of typing your password each time you sign in to your Google Account, you can get a prompt sent to a phone that is always with you.

When you get a prompt from Google, tap the notification to confirm, and you'll be signed in quickly and securely. If your phone isn't nearby, you can select "Use your password instead" on the sign-in screen.

NOTE: iPhone users please click here, the instructions below is for Android users that I have tested and confirmed that it's 100% working.

Here is how you set up your phone:

  1. On your computer or tablet, go to the "Sign in & security" section of My Account. You might need to sign in to your Google Account.
  2. In the "Tired of typing passwords?" box, select Get started.
  3. Select Set it up, then sign in to your account. You'll be taken to a guided setup process.
  4. In the "Use your phone to sign in" section, choose which phone you want to use to sign in.
  5. Turn on your Android phone's security feature.
    • If there isn't a check next to "Screen lock," select Add a screen lock and follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. Choose Next.
  7. Below your username, select Next to practice how you'll sign in.
  8. On your Android phone, follow the onscreen instructions to see Google's prompt, then tap Yes.
  9. On your computer or tablet, select Turn on to finish setup.
Now whenever you sign in to your Google Account, you'll get a "Trying to sign in?" prompt sent to your phone.

Then sign in with your phone

  1. When signing in, enter your email address or phone number, then select Next. (Your information might show up automatically.) You'll see a reminder to check your phone to sign in.
  2. Unlock your Android phone.
  3. On the "Trying to sign in?" prompt sent to your phone, tap Yes.

You may also change the phone you use to sign in or stop the feature at any time. Here is how:

Changing the phone

  1. Go to the "Use your phone to sign in" section of My Account.
  2. Unlock your Android phone.
  3. On the "Trying to sign in?" prompt sent to your phone, tap Yes.
  4. Select Add a phone.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up a phone.

To stop signing with your phone

  1. Go to the "Use your phone to sign in" section of My Account.
  2. Select Turn off.
You can turn this feature back on at any time.

Final thoughts:

Signing in with your phone is an easy and secure alternative to using your password. Strong passwords have a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, often making them difficult to remember and type, especially on small screens.

To sign in with your phone, you need to turn on Screen lock. This security feature helps prevent anyone else from unlocking your phone and using it to sign in to your Google Account.
